AFL Reserves will happen no matter how much we hate the idea. I believe the AFL should set up there own Reserves Comp like the Holden Cup and Youth League Soccer. Yes it will cost money but they are racking in enough and I'm sure if they could get people to sponsor the Foxtel Cup then they could get Sponsors for the Reserves and can the Foxtel Cup.
However I see this for whatever reason they have as unlikely to happen.
What I would be happy to see happen if Reserves sides must happen is the following:
Adelaide Crows become the 10th Team in the SANFL Reserves - Supplementary players can be made up from U/18 Team on the Bye. This would allow the SANFL Club to have a look at some players playing at the Reserves level without having to fit them into there own team.
Port Power could take the place of the Port Magpies SANFL Reserves side - Players not selected for SANFL League duty would be used to top up the Reserves. It would reduce the size of the Port squad which would help them to cut costs.
This would not harm the integrity of the SANFL League Comp yet would provide the AFL Clubs with what they want.
Agree TC, except for the supplementary players part. Having say 10 different players in and out each week, the Crows would have a fair argument to say it's disruptive to playing to a game plan, even if just at reserves level.
I think a reasonable compromise would be the Crows being able to add 12-15 players to their "reserves" squad for the year, chosen from those who have just finished u/18's but not drafted. The Crows would be able to have a look at these players close-up, but they only get them for the year and if not drafted go back to their SANFL club. Perhaps the SANFL clubs could each nominate two players they think will play league footy before the Crows have their picks, but would this be seen as holding back a players potential shot at the AFL?
