Richard Henry (Dick) Jones Vale

Postby kempey » Fri Jan 25, 2013 11:43 am

In the Advertiser this morning is the death notice of Richard Henry (Dick) Jones. Dick was the coach of West Torrens who controversially "sacked" Bob Hank.
He was also involved in the media working with the ABC, Channel Ten and Ashley Hornsey's Football Times.
His slick back hair and quick fire presentation style were memorable....... as were phrases like "Shut the gate... the horse has bolted.... (such and such) WILL WIN.
He was also involved in the infamous Rupert Max Stuart trial and rather unfairly portrayed in the film "Black and White" with Robert Carlyle.

So far not read any. Dick was contraversial all through his life as a Cop, Football Personality (Coach and Commentator) and as a Publican but he was a very good bloke to listen to over a beer or 3!

I quite enjoyed listening to him as a kid, he had a guest spot on some tv show - ABC News? - where he would stare into the camera, and give his 2 bobs worth about something. At the same time - early/mid 80's - I enjoyed reading his articles in the Footy Times.

He must have lived til quite an old age?

Anyway, a real character of a bygone era.

RIP Dick.

Still remember his article and headline in the first edition of Footy Times for 1986 " Why the Bays can't win the flag" after losing Kernahan and McGuinness he didn't obviously think they could go back to back.

Interesting on that footage to see Dick Jones foresee a West Torrens merger, although his prediction was that it would be with West Adelaide.

West West Adelaide Torrens ?
West Adelaide Torrens West ?
West Torrens Adelaide West ?

Red black blue and gold ?
Or maybe Doug Thomas's comment ...... We will merge with anyone as long as we are red and black, known as West Adelaide and play our games at Richmond Oval.

Dick Jones was a scream to listen to
He was part of the around the ground scores on one of the radio stations
On one occasion ,they crossed to Dick , the central radio broadcaster asked about the size of the crowd
Dick Replied
" Ive seen more people at a scene of an accident "

Dick had a predominantly one paced calling voice
He was witty, at times sarcastic , and a very entertaining man
