Yes, but the reason Racial Vlification or any Vilification is wrong is because it has the potential to hurt the other person. Obviously, if someone reacts like Gowsa did it means that the comments hurt a bit. It has the same impact as any vilification in that respect. There is no need to fire back more comments at that point, adding to the issue. Rather, it is a good time to pull the head back in, even apologise if at all possible. It definitely takes no guts at all to throw comments to a player from behind the safety of the boundary fence. Something 'small' people would tend to do.
.. btw, yes, there is no excuse for Gowsa reacting the way he did either. As stated originally, neither party involved comes out looking good.
Anyway, enough said by me and it is probably only the teacher in me that is why I feel this way.
Cheers

If I saw an opposition player having a bit of a sook, I would jump in! The tissues line was perfect, especially if tissues were handy at the time, it's all a bit of fun. Gowza, whilst unhappy, shouldn't have come back with full-on obscenities at someone in the crowd, something witty perhaps but not something crass or blunt like what he ALLEGEDLY said. BUT, once Gowza had shown an angry, abusive response, the conversation should have stopped there.

If you give it, then you've got to be able to take it. You also can't then sook about what someone says back to you if you started it!

I have no problem having a sledge but if i do sledge im not going to have a sook or call them an idiot or anything for saying something back.

If a do bag an opposition player loudly i EXPECT some opposition supporter to say something back, all part and parcel of it.

Reminds me of the time i sledged Colville at Woodville Oval about something, he responsded with the old you wouldnt even get a kick so shut your mouth (fair enough)

My response "i know i wouldnt mate but to be honest i wouldnt be seen in public with flaming red hair either"

Got a laugh out of big Kenny McGregor who was next to him.

surely the only issue here with gowans is the filthy language used? Bad form. but we shouldn't be shocked if a player bites back, god knows we give 'em heaps! Intimidation within the crowd, however, is not on. We want to encourage folks to get along to our great league, not scare 'em off.

Now it's been substituted by their feeble record against the Dogs - anywhere, anytime.

Still one of the few teams that have beaten the Dogs at Elizabeth in recent years ;)
