That first quarter free in the goal square was one of the worst decisions I have ever seen. At the time I thought that only Tony Dey would be the only umpire to totally misunderstand the intent of the rule and pay that one. Why does he still umpire league football?

Speaking to an official from the SANFL Umpire's Panel this morning, here at Alberton, they were of the impression that 'technically' the free kick paid was correct as Sandery had 2 team-mates next to him that he could have handballed it to.

That being said, having watched the replay myself this morning, I feel that with Thomas hammering down on Sandery, there was enough pressure there to warrant Mitch's eventual decision.

More a 'lack of a feel for the game' decision by the umpire in my opinion.

He is a big lad but didn't show anything skill wise and certainly didn't look to have a great fitness base. Dropped 3 or 4 very easy overhead marks and looks gangly and uncomfortable out there.

He may need another couple of weeks in the 2's to find his feet but I don't think he showed anything more than an injured Dallas Hill could offer.

Speaking to a Norwood official this morning here at Alberton, he tells me Josh Hubbard comes from a Basketball background and the season before last actually trained for a couple of weeks with the Redlegs.

After having a look at him, the Legs felt he just wasn't up to it and didn't have the 'basic skill set' to make it, so they subsequently let him go.

At the ground live i felt the decision was right under the current rules (i dont agree with the rule) BUT i was standing infront of the beer van behind the northern goals so was as far away from the action as possible at Elizabeth Oval.

Isn't this just another way of saying you simply don't like it? The umpires are simply there to judge rules. If you don't like them making "technically correct" decisions then you really want the rules changed. The whole "no feel for the game" criticism is just a cop out IMHO. Especially coming from blokes who played as much SANFL footy as the umpires but don't have the training and assistance to make better decisions.

If the umpire is there to make a call on the rules, purely on the way they are written, why isn't deliberate out of bounds payed a hell of a lot more? Benefit of the doubt?

Yes, I didn't like the decision made, I thought it was the wrong one. I'll be sure to remember to just post that in future.

As I recall, an "under pressure" element has been suggested before on this forum when this has come up. Is anyone aware of a local variation, or another rule, that might dictate or imply this element and, therefore, that Dey had actually erred?

Obviously not.

Thanks anyway.

BP, I think StrayDog has established (and unless I've missed it, no other commenters offer contrary evidence) that the pressure argument is not part of the rule.

My reading of it is simply to imagine that the goal line you are defending is like any other part of the boundary line - and if you put the ball over the line deliberately as a tactical manoeuvre you will be deemed to have infringed. And, just like the deliberate out of bounds decisions, it's a bit of a lottery as to when it will be given and when it won't - so much rests on the "deliberately".

Therefore, the infringement was there, and on this occasion we got lucky with the awarding of the free kick.
