Very enjoyable game of footy yesterday - Port have improved significantly from 2010 & could well make the finals, I would suggest they will finish the season between 4th & 7th.

Our blokes are starting to find touch - albeit with some significant 'outs' @ the present time.

Treeby did an outstanding job as a makeshift CHF.
Day has cemented his spot as the defender on the opposition's tall forward.
'Bear' killed Maric in the final quarter - which was important because Maric had been a damaging player full of confidence until that point.

Whoever that bloke wearing no. 57 is ;) - appears to be a handy player to me
(Having his best start to a season for quite some time)

Must mention Godden's coaching, also.
I have been critical of him but I think he got it right yesterday @ 3/4 time.
He recognised that the game was going to be won out of the middle & moved 'our' prime moveres into the centre of the ground (Macca, Powell & Parry) - moving Vince to the forward line gave us a marking target also - Well done Mick, showed something like a 'Plan B' :)

Hopeless wasn't it! Thats the second time in a 3 or 4 weeks they've done something like that. I was interested to see how Jacobs went, I noticed he got abov 25 disposals, anyone got an opinion on how he went?

1 Luke Powell he took over from Cica today and even kicked 2 goals in a quarter. Not sure if he had kicked 2 in a game let alone in a quarter before.
2 Leigh Treeby taking a specky mark.Didnt know Leigh could fly ;)

Cheers

Powell has only been a multiple goalscorer twice before in his 157 game career - 3.2 vs Port in Round 8 2005 and 2.0 vs North in that fiery encounter last year.
And probably is another reason why Treeby should be a permanent forward - he can even take the specky!

One other thing to comment on as far as our season goes is the similarity to our opening 6 matches for the past two seasons. In 2009 after Round 6, we were 4-1-1 in 2nd spot. The rest of the minor round season was 7-7.
Last year after Round 7, we were 5-1 and top on %. The rest of the minor round season was 6-8.

It remains to be seen whether this is our best footy and it gets worse, or we can improve and secure at least a top 3 spot. I'd like to think it's the latter.

Thanks Spell check ;)

It improves the record - before this sequence, the record was only three.

Did the Eagles do enough to suggest they can knock off Centrals at Elizabeth next week?

No, I don't think so.
Still have a very unsettled side IMHO.
This week is not important, although the next 4 games will be interesting (Centrals, West, Bays & Silver Spoons) - we need to get to the end of Minor Round with a settled team (hopefully in top 3)... as we all know, that's when the season REALLY starts.

Dogs to win this week for mine but may be different later in year :-s

Going to have to disagree with you regarding this weeks game LEH,

yes the side is unsettled, but sounds like the doggies could be in the same boat.....good sides stand up just like centrals have against the bays and sturt in the past 2 weeks.
If we are going to finish top 3 come september this week (and every week) is of massive importance, the last 2 weeks the boys have shown a fair bit of character to get wins against good opposition, a win this week could put either us or centrals equal top or outright top depending on the result of the West V Glenelg game the night before...lose and either side can fall back into the pack.

It's a massive game and im sure both sides will be going hard at it.
Trust the process.

Yep Columbo I know we will be keen as mustard to get the points. Rack up plenty of points now and we can afford to lose a few games in the second half of the season when hard training takes its toll.

Thanks spelly. We're slowly closing the gap on Port's win-loss record against us.

ferret wrote:I must comment on Parry's courageous effort today, obviously playing under difficulties from an injury two weeks ago, he performed magnificently to get on top of Meikeljohn and Maric to set up the Eagles win. His second half effort was stoic. His clean hitouts to advantage let the Eagles get on top in the clearance contests. Parry's recruiting by the Eagles has been understated by many outside the club but he is very highly regarded by supporters both for his on and off the field contributions to the club.

Fully concur Ferret. His ability to keep leaping well into the last quarter wore down the Port duo.
Speaking to Parry, he feels very comfortable at the Eagles, a well run club with a culture (there's that word) of winning and not accepting second best. He feels very responsible to the club and prepares himself of and on the field accordingly.

Too true! Centrals masters of this way of playing out a season.
