Not sure about which is better per se, but I've been living in Melbourne for 3 footy seasons now and haven't been able to bring myself to watch a VFL match (live or on TV). I think one of the greatest things about the SANFL in the AFL age is the feelings and memories that you get when you head to the local oval where you've been going for years. A real "tribal" experience. Not having grown up here in Melbourne, I'm not attached and can't get myself into the VFL even though the footy might be 10 times better (not saying it is, but as an example). Obviously, a Victorian in Adelaide would feel the same about the SANFL there. I guess to me, defining "better" is about where the heart is.

Not necessarily rk

I moved from Melbourne to Perth four years ago and stuck my head in to watch East Fremantle in the WAFL and got a reasonable level of attachment, but not as quite as much as I would have if it were the pre-1987 days when they drew double and triple the crowds and player quality was higher before the Eagles started up.

I admit about 'the heart' - my heart is with Sandringham (VFA) and Carlton (VFL/AFL), but East Freo have filled in the VFA gap to a degree, especially with the way the VFL has run down the second tier of football in the state to a level of disillusionment amongst the 'tribal' element at the expense of the hope that AFL supporters will 'come to watch the Magoos' ... but it hasn't happened as they'd hoped. Local competitions such as the Eastern, Northern and Essendon Leagues have experienced a steady increase in the past 10 years to the point where a number of clubs draw larger crowds than VFL sides frequently.

My love of the Zebras is all but gone (apart from the memories of the VFA days) now that they are little more than just the St Kilda Reserves.

Any of our Vic based posters able to shed any light on what the Yarra City Council are doing to the terraces of Victoria Park? As described above in my original story it was a pretty good place to watch footy from

looking at the video here they are getting rid of them altogether?
