James Allen, Justin Ciccolella, Richard Douglas, etc.

Perhaps I should've raised the question;

Do we need to have a new column in the stats page for hard ball disposals & 'easy' receptions?

Any analogies to add?

Well I guess if it's not a hardball get, then it must be an uncontested possession.

Stick that up your analogy.

There are three types of possessions:

1 - sitting out on your own just waiting for any easy get
2 - running hard to work to get to the right spot and recieve a run recieve but still without necessarily an opponent all that close to you and then dispose under pressure
3 - a hard body contact contested possession against the opposition including lead up and pack marks

How ever you want to classify them, I don't care, but there are three not two categories.

All categories may well be as effective to the team but the profile does over a game/season/career reflect the type of player a particular player is.

Only 2 kinds of possessions get counted on the stat sheet though. Contested and Uncontested. Are you thinking of handball receives Margery Legend?

I know some SANFL clubs that when calling their stats will just count the handball while other will also specify it as either a hanball or handball receive as TSG is reffering to.

When he first came to the SANFL I used to think that James Allan did just get the cheap kicks and rack up the easy stats but having seen him busting a gut either at training or seeing him have his customary 'chuck' at 1/4 and 3/4 time breaks, I can see how hard he does work and think he is one of the better midfielders in the league without doubt.

No I reckon kick recieives can be in category 2 as well as Cat 1 TSG.

Another quality ability to out run or out read your opponent to take a possession uncontested ... IMHO Allan does both and is obviously a very good player.

If not for a couple of injuries and a couple of dodgy umpire votes James Allan would have won about 5 Liston and Magarey Medals in a row which is quite extraordinary and a testament to how good a player he is.
Haven't seen that sort of consistent form from a player for a while and probably wont see it again for a while either.
