Thought the crowd was probably around 4000 before the game and around 5500 by the start of the 2nd quarter.
Was a great game I thought. You could see the result coming from a mile off though. I said to my mate about 10 minutes into the last that Norwood will get up here. You just cant have the ball inside your forward 50 for 10-12 minutes and only score 0.2 in a tight contest and get the win. Port just had to get a goal to get that buffer but couldnt do it. Norwood were fitter and ran over the top and dominated possession themselves in the last 5-6 minutes. I counted 8 different Port blokes go down with cramp in the last 10 minutes and dont think I saw a single Norwood player do the same.
Butcher and Gallagher were the stars on the day. Butcher looked every bit a first round draft pick, took 9 marks and kicked 3 goals in the third quarter. Great pace off the mark, took at least 3 strong contested marks and made just about the best run down tackle ive ever seen from a big man.
Norwood deserved the win and I must say, they had the umpires against them as well. Not sure what the stats are but there must have been 70 free kicks (seemed to be a free every 30 seconds) and I reckon 50 of them went our way.
A good and refreshingly unbiased summation ‘M19’.
Funny how we see things a little differently from the other side though. Working through your review I thought it was a pretty scrappy match and started to wonder how much you were going to win by. I agree we were never going to give up in the last quarter while it was that close, but I’m amazed we kept within striking distance with our feeble forays into the goal 50 throughout the game. Your defenders made life very difficult. Bugger ‘em! lol
Yes, a couple more Port blokes cramped up, but I noticed 3 or 4 of ours had to stretch ‘em out in the 2nd half too. As for our fitness, the first thing that stood out at the start for me was the extra muscle that your blokes had developed since last year. Especially on their thighs.
I like to think I’m not an ‘umpire basher’, but must agree with you about the majority of decisions.
Sorry I’ve forgotten the name of your ‘ranga’ in the team. If he avoids injury, he’ll do a lot of damage for your club this year. Very handy player. As a Norwood bloke through and through, I hate to say that the Magpies will not finish near the bottom if Saturday’s game is anything to go by.
