Obviously Fev hasn't been training us much as he would have if still with the Lions and not in rehab, shows a little bit doesn't it...

Perhaps he'll become a "foodaholic" instead of an alcoholic if he sticks to the Antabuse.

Yes, a lot can happen in a couple of days can't it AH, especially when Brendan is involved?

Sad to hear tonight on the Footy Show that it got that bad he tried to take his own life...

Will be interesting if Casey decide they still want Fev to play for them after today's events?

I will preface my comments by admitting I don't like Fevola, I have no respect whatsoever for him, but I've pushed personal feelings aside. The problem we are seeing with Fevola is there are too many people addressing this as a football issue. They see a guy who kicks goals, and this overwrites everything else. "Let's do whatever we can do to get this guy on the field".

It is not a football issue, it's a lifestyle one. IMHO, I believe the one aspect that Fevola cannot fight is the price of fame. For a person like Fevola to rehabilitate, he needs to walk away from a public profile and work on this without cameras snapping away at his every move.

In other words, if people really want to help Fevola, as they claim they wish to, they must forget about him playing football. I continue to say this ... there are more important things in life than football.

Craig Hutchison made a good point (surprising I know... :? )

Casey are delusional if they thought they were going to sign him, and everything was going to be roses and chocolates forever more.

If they walk away at setback number 1, then they are pretty piss weak.

I feel really sorry for the bloke. Ive always thought he was a complete boof head who is his own worst enemy and he DGAF, but last night he looked very humbled and broken down.

Maybe the penny has actually, really, finally dropped for him.

It will be pretty disappointing for him if he lands in Vegas this week though..... He isnt going to get a seconds peace wherever he goes now anyway.

This is precisely what I was eluding to in my earlier post. All Casey Scorpions were looking at is Fevola's football ability, no other factor was taken into account. Now that he wants to play for Casey, and he's made the news once again, they are beginning to realise the ramifications of their decision.

I find this statement (in bold text) somewhat surprising and disappointing. (I've copied all the quotes so it is in full context to readers):

AFL Football Operations manager Adrian Anderson says he finds it hard to be optimistic about Fevola's football career and warned the public against making gross generalizations about AFL players and their behaviour in light of Fevola's transgressions.

''This is one player with his particular medical issues and for every one of him, there are 50 others who cope things in a completely different manner and who dont suffer from these situations,'' he told ABC radio.
''It's the nature of these situations, that theyre not easily cured and fixed.

He declined to say he was optimistic for Fevola.

''Obviously the set back yesterday is not good news,'' Mr Anderson said.

''It's hard to be optimistic but we certainly wish and hope for him the very best and well do what can to make sure he has expert help available.''

The bold text above sounds very much like the AFL is tired of dealing with Fevola. That may be the case, but it isn't helpful to say so publicly in response to the individual saying his life was at such a low he sought to end it.

I have no doubt the AFL is also tired of dealing with Miss 17 year old as well, but in that case they have certainly endeavoured to emphasise her welfare.

With players seeking 27% of gross revenue to be directed to their salaries, the sad thing is that more of these problems are likely to occur. When the draft picks kids up from school, deposits them interstate and leaves their whole support network dependent on a purely footy environment, it's no wonder that a lot of them will struggle to cope with footy pressures, and post-footy pressures. I'm surprised that the AFLPA doesn't seem to encourage better support mechanisms for junior draftees, which would include quarantining some of their salary and making provision for them to do part-time work, study or other non-football related community activities like most other kids would be doing. It's not that problems with AFL players are restricted to young kids either - more and more they seem to be plaguing players in the twilight of their careers, right at a time when the uncertainty of their future beyond football is likely to be really wearing on them.

For "player" read "person".

Perhaps Mr Anderson should be warned against making gross generalisations about how "50 others" may or may not "cope with things" with respect to "every one of him."
