Mentioned in the Sunday Mail today that Darren Chandler from the SANFL expects an answer from the AFL tomorrow as to whether or not this competition will go ahead next season.

Think it's a great idea, it exposes the SANFL to a national market. Imagine seeing a typical Central District performance, making the VFL's premier side seem a rabble like South Adelaide, clubs would pick up new fans interstate and become people's 2nd teams after their chosen AFL club, With 18 teams going to be in the AFL will provide an oppurtunity for the players to expose themselves on a bigger stage! Will also make the 4 v 5 final a little more interesting! Players would love the oppurtunity to travel as a group and achieve something a little different too.

The news of AA this arvo made mention of these games being played as AFL curtain raisers at Etihad and the MCG in July / August next year?

If your team was playing an AFL curtain raiser in this competition at the MCG or Etihad would you head to Melbourne to watch?

I know I would, especially when you can fly there and back for about $100 these days...

I think the concept is a good one however I don't like the idea of the games being played as curtain-raisers to AFL games but can understand that Foxtel would want to do this to save broadcast costs which is fair enough. For CDFC to play Ballarat before an AFL game with supporters that have no affinity to either club is pointless, also if Glenelg were to play Claremont before a Crows home game would Glenelg supporters have to buy an AFL ticket just to see their team play, if they were willing to then how does that work if the Crow's game is a sellout? These games should be played so that each of the clubs supporters get the best possible chance to see their team play, not as a prop for AFL games.
Last night on 5AA Darren Chandler (speaking on behalf of the AFL) used the words "our state competitions" as if the AFL owned and ran all of them, which is obviously what they think and probably is the truth by default. So my thinking is that this is a lever to get the last few state leagues to tag themselves as "AFL" in order for their best teams to take part in this competition. Thus we'll have SAAFL, WAAFL etc across the country with the necessary clauses of control signed over to the AFL.

it would be AFLSA, AFLWA.
As you said Foxtel want to do this - they don't care who comes to watch it live, they want people to watch it on tv.

And if they get their way only on pay TV with Foxtel.
At which point I quit following AFL at all, so I'd like to see the SANFL survive.
Foxtel would like the state leagues not to be there for the supporters to go back to.

Yeah sure Foxtel ideally would like all AFL games on their network.
The reality is that it won't happen.
It's too valuable for the FTA stations and vast majority of Australians won't or can't pay for Foxtel.

Foxtel currently see a gap in their AFL matchday coverage and that's why they want the 2nd tier comp.
Unfortunately it most likely means curtain raiser games only, but they's got broadcast practicalities to consider.

"Feader Leagues" - I hate this description, very demeaning.

The other one thats gives me the *hits is calling Australian rules football "AFL", started in the eastern states but is now prevelant in SA,VIC and WA. Its a league not a sport.

Unfortunately it's very common now amongst the TV commentators as well (and others who should know better).

Something I noticed when I was in Brisbane in the 1990's ... shoot me if I every use the term to describe the sport on air.

Thankfully the Americans still use "Australian Rules Footballer" ... heard it when they mentioned Sav Rocca (Philadelphia Eagles punter) yesterday ... then again AFL in the US is the recently defunct Arena Football League.

If anything, the U18s is the "feeder league" these days.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Anything other than the AFL is a feeder league
