I'll be bouncing if the Bulldogs win and throwing up if Norwood do.

Yes, it's very time consuming, and really taking the focus off Sunday.

I think the SANFL have it dead right. Bounce if you want and can, throw otherwise. And if the bounce is crap just throw it. Bouncing is fair enough but it isn't sacred like the AFL seem to make it out to be.

Disagree I think VOICE has brought up a very contentious ussue

The last qtr NW V EG is proof enough of a couple of bad umpire bouncings
Its a great skill to bounce a footy, Ive tried it and nearly always fluff it
The alternnative of throwing up the ball is safer and fairer and less stressful for the umps

Very good post and poll issue

Like everything in our great game there is unpredictabililty, which is why bouncing the ball up is a highly skilfull thing to do. I like the idea of bouncing, but if an ump loses a bit of confidence or does a bad bounce then he should throw it up.
The problem with bouncing i think has more to dp with what happens around the ball up than the actuall bounce itself. By bouncing the ball the umpire takes his eye off the play and then needs to re focus on the 2 ruckman trying to hit the ball, which at times the umpire may call a free for holding of a ruckman when infact both have been holding each other. But with a throw up the umpire can still focus on what is going on around him.

If the ump tosses it up, the tallest ruckman will always win.

If the ump bounces it, the slightest deviation makes it a true ruck duel. :D

Bounce the ball. :D

You are balanced out mate.
I selected "throw" for consistency, but Dog-ger's comment has given me second thoughts.

A nice bounce takes a lot of skill, and looks great... It is a rare moment when the umpires are able to show off a skill, and if they have that skill, I would prefer to see them do it.

Having said that, I did say it takes a lot of skill, and if you don't have that skill, you will only embarrass yourself and the game.

Bounce if you can, throw if you can't.

Serious Question
Do you go to a game of football to see the skill of the umpires

imho unless they could get it perfect 100% of the time than dont bother.

No WHUFC, certainly don't go to watch the umps, but I appreciate that they want to show some skill...

I agree with the second part too, if they can, they should go for it. If they can't, they should throw it up.

Not sure what the local official variations are currently but, FWIW, here's an extract from "the variations to the Laws of Australian Football that apply at all levels of SANFL football" from the SANFL Website circa 2006.

11. COMMENCING PLAY AND CHOICE OF GOAL
11.3.3 Throwing Up Football
Field Umpires who do not aspire to achieve AFL football throw the ball up both in the centre and
across the field.

I'd be grateful if someone could point to something a bit more recent. Unless I'm missing something it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Maybe this is the way to go...?
