The SANFL and Night Matches

Postby Sojourner » Mon Aug 16, 2010 10:43 pm

My mail is that South will have lights up for next season, Glenelg are likely to be in for next season also depending on Council approval which now seems in a much better position.

Port Adelaide had some press about lights at Alberton Oval yet that seems to have gone a little cold in recent times perhaps the Council reserving their decision until the club has met certain KPI's to suggest that their investment would be maintained.

Westies have had a massive amount of success with their lights project and have moved day games to night games to maximise attendances to their benefit. Central seem to use theirs when they feel like it.

It appears that night matches, particularly at the beginning and the end of the season are becoming more common place and will continue to do so with increased crowds and revenue streams for those clubs that host them.

Which then puts the blowtorch onto those clubs that do not have the capacity to have lights at their grounds and could even potentially be whiteanted by neutral supporters and others who pick and choose what games they see going along to the night venue matches instead.

North Adelaide, Sturt, and Woodville West Torrens appear to be in a situation where local councils will not permit night footy because of light spillage into nearby homes, which one would suggest will place these clubs at a disadvantage. Sturt seem to get reasonable crowds at Unley, yet North last Saturday 1 222 are struggling and Woodville West Torrens also see crowds under 2000.

Adelaide Oval if the redevelopment goes ahead is likely going to be off limits for SANFL club football, Football Park is only local to Port Adelaide and they could well tap into that if its made available, yet the amount of options for the other three seems fairly limited. The SANFL administration seem fairly keen to Salary Cap and control clubs playing lists in terms of Imported players, I do wonder what they have in mind to keep the playing field level for those clubs that can tap into hosting night footy as opposed to those that can? Not particularly much one might think.

well maybe if the SAAFL get their grant that the missed out on this year maybe they could hire out Thebby at a reasonable price? but with all things concerned with that organisation it will be overpriced and under resourced failure....

If North, Sturt and the Eagles hold out long enough Saturday afternoon will be the new Friday night and crowds will come storming back!

the lights must be suitable for junior games but not up to standard for the seniors.

Long term Thebarton may be an option for Eagles & others is SAAFL can secure funding to upgrade / replace.

Magpies probably need them the most, they need the most schedule flexibility having to avoid clashing with both Power (Magpie fans) and Crows (visiting team fans) AFL games.

Trust me they are not up to standard for any night games, when we played North a few weeks back, I had trouble seeing the ball, even Champion Data had trouble seeing the numbers on the jumpers.

There'd me more people on the field than off it.

We had a Sunday Night game at Norwood against Port Adelaide and it only worked because:
1. It was Norwood v port Adelaide
2. There was a public holiday the next day
3. The weather was good.

Well at night time the air is cooler and therefore denser, meaning that the signal from the clown on the PA will propagate more quickly....
