Agreed, for the last decade, I don't believe we've had so many quality players miss so many games. Pre 2000 we had plenty of hard luck injury stories, Michael Wright, Greg Smith, Jimmy Wynd and plenty more. This decade "touch wood" we had been pretty fortunate (excluding Sully breaking his leg). However, i believe we've only used 37 or so players thus far this year, which is quite low.
It may be overly optimistic to think all these players will get back for finals. Others just have to continue to take their opportunity.

No not really, a bloke like Cochrane is the fittest he has ever been because all he had done is fitness work. While the rest of the injured players have given the Elizabeth Aquadome an absolute flogging swimming well over 1.5km 3 times a week. Most personal trainers will say as well that aqua work is the best cardio a person can get. James Gowans is in great shape at the moment and has probably done more work than any other player at the club.

Massive advantage for Central to have a facility like the Elizabeth Aquadome next door to them.

Not a 50 meter olympic sized pool with 2 free lanes available to them at any time.

Dutchy have you ever tried swimming 1km in a 25 meter pool.

LOL

in theory yes but not really the case, swimming is all about rythm and repetition for blokes like the Gowans or Spurr who are extremly strong swimmers only swimming 25 meters before having the turn is not ideal as their breathing patterns and heart rate wouldn't be ideal for a cardio work out.

You would never ever ever see Ian Thorpe or Grant Hackett swimming laps in a 25m pool in prepartion for 1500 meter race.

to get there cardio/fitness capacity up for the race they would for sure, if it was possible.

Though as the race got closer they would go back into the fifty as they would need to get there stroke and breathing rates down pat as that is almost more critical than sheer speed.

Seen a short course 1500 m race recently??

But anyways I tend to agree with most of what you say, not the best preparation - unless you make sure the boys use a 4 or 6 beat kick the arms do more work - but one that is invaluable at this point in time in maintaining fitness.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Im not sure if the blokes have had swimming training or not but they all have very good technique and they are definalty using a 4 beat kick with the 2 breathes, one of our club swimmers is a young lad who is the 50m freestyle state champion and he was extremly impressed by James Gowans ability over the longer distance.

Sorry its off topic but swimmers are nuts jump in a pool and swim up to 7km a day up and down the pool.

A real case of men Vs Boys. Centrals had some outs but the loss of Cloke had far more impact on our boys. No Clayton too, means there's a real dearth of on-field leadership.

And I certainly hope the Magpies file away the send-off as they left the field!

Thanks for the invite CENTURIAN, I thoroughly enjoyed the day (mostly).
