How big/if any of an advantage is it........................

Postby whufc » Sun Aug 08, 2010 11:56 pm

to have your reserves playing finals while the big boys are still in the league finals.

The reason i bring this up is that the Central, Glenelg and Norwood reserves are in a battle for the fifth and final spot in the reserves finals.

You would think only one of these sides can make it, is this an advantage over the other sides if they do?

Yes there is an advantage. No doubt.

If your reserves miss out, you can only play 21 guys in a final from a finals train-on squad of 30. Match practice and especially match fitness is vital. TBH, Norwood has had a very good run with injury in comparison to Central, so I'd think it would be all the more important for Central. I'm not up to speed on the Bay's injury list atm but I think it is important - especially for the first fortnight of finals at least.

I do think it's an advantage. Would rather bring in a late replacement for the GF with some finals footy under his belt than just training for since R23. Also it helps put pressure on knowing players under are performing. And lastly it gives everyone a lift when the other sides get finals wins. Perhaps lower grade wins don't mean as much to most as the main game but it means something anyway.

Ask any of the Glenelg Reserves boys from last year, and they'll tell you how much better it was to have both sides training through the finals. During that last week before the GF the training sessions definately felt strange, not having everyone out there together

Is it a good reason to scrap the reserves finals?

Award the reserves premiership to the team that finishes top after round 23.

League clubs in finals have reserves play in trial games. Full numbers in training and gives the club an idea who is in form should a player be dropped/injured in a grand final.

Bad idea?

Yep, bad idea, otherwise the Bays wouldn't have won their Reserves flag last year......

Terrible idea. Footy is based around winning finals to claim a premiership.
