To borrow from the Masterchef theme, Glenelg spent the first half mixing up the ingredients (albeit with some help from the judges: 4 goals from dubious frees), the third Q they did the baking and the last they applied the icing: 9 goals of sugar coated footy.
Only the most optimistic Bloods supporter could find any positives from today’s performance. Our first half was reasonable, the last half abysmal. The gap between second and fifth is enormous. We have played first and second in our last 2 games and have been comprehensively belted. We know where we sit and we are not serious finals contenders. Coach Collins described the game against Centrals as the worst of the year so what will he come up with this week?
Following the inexplicable dumping of Bricknell, Westies overlooked Homburg and played Ryan Blesing. Beech didn’t play. Bronik Davies tagged Tenace and Champion took Kirkby. The game got off to a bad start with a free to the Bays before the first siren and then followed 2 goals to Glenelg from frees into a 6 goal wind. Westies fought back but kicked poorly with the breeze and at Q time led 4.5 to 2.1. With Hartlett, Bennett and Pettigrew down fwd we had plenty of marking power but we failed to use it. At one stage Hartlett marked 15m out from goal and handballed to a Bay player.
The 2nd Q started with the Bays getting 2 gimme gls. A blatant push out was ignored by the ump: goal. A little later a low mark was paid right in front when the ball clearly spilled out. None of this really mattered except that it added to the frustration felt by the hapless Bloods as the Bays gradually asserted themselves on the game. Half time the scoreline still looked respectable with Gl 9.1 to WA 6.6.
The 3rd Q saw the Bays strangle Westies keeping them goal-less in 25 minutes of high class footy. They added 2 into the breeze, our fwds looked lost and Morris was reported for a charge that missed just about everything. Glenelg were on top in every facet of the game. They were quicker, tougher, stronger, won the stoppages, outmarked us, had players at the ball and backed each other up. We were an undisciplined rabble. How often did we all fly for a mark, go backwards, fail to kick long with the breeze, cough the ball up when under pressure, etc. 3Q time Gl 11.3, WA 6.8.
The last Q was a total rout. The Bays booted 9 gls this Q while we got our only major for the entire last half as the final siren sounded! At one point Ezard took possession, ran with the ball, bounced it 3 times then kicked a 20m grubber to a Bay player: this from the current Magarey medalist! Bronik Davies running unchecked into an open goal hit the post from no more than 3 mtrs out! Fisher limped off after colliding with an equally sick Kirk. Final score Gl 20.4, WA 7.11.
Best for Westies was Willets who rucked valiantly against quality opposition in Cranston and Sellar and broke even. Well done Bruce. Piasente was his usual consistent self as was Silvester. Davenport with 3 goals from 7 deserves a mention but we will lose him next week. Pettigrew is struggling for form, Hartlett just plays dumb footy, Bennett, Champion, Fielke and Caire continue to struggle against quality opposition.
The 2’s lost 14.6 to 10.7. In the last Q of this game a Bay player leapt into the back of a West player in an attempt to mark and the umpire paid a free to Glenelg for shepherding. The West player clearly had no idea the Bay player was even there. This was possibly the worst decision ever made in the history of the SANFL! The quality of officiating in this league at the moment must be at its lowest ever standard.
