Re: WEIGHT LOSS + the challenge

Not sure where to put this, so here will do...

Attempting a 10 day de-tox, kind of.

No grog for 10 days. I am into Day 5 today. Managed to cook a BBQ last night without a beer. Something that previously I thought was simply not possible.

Got to get through tonight, tomorrow, and toughest of all Sunday (Cricket Semi Final) without a beer.... that's just weird.

If I can make it, then Monday, Tues & Wed (days 8,9 & 10) will be a breeze.

If I loose a little weight along the way - bonus.

January 31st was the deadline for incoming players in ASCA.

What about outgoing? My 17yo son ain't getting a game this weekend but I can get him a game elsewhere, obviously being in his first year of senior cricket Im keen for him to play somewhere otherwise he will lose interest I feel

Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

HCA GF Preview
From The Mount Barker Courier Newspaper

Quality clash on offer

Fittingly the two best sides throughout the 2023-24 HCA A-grade season will lock horns this Saturday at Heathfield Oval. Mt Lofty host Scott Creek Ironbank in what is shaping as a fascinating title-decider and will be live streamed via Call of the Wild and Filming Cricket on youtube. Jordan Neis-Beer will captain the Redcaps and knows what is required, having led Mt Lofty to a breakthrough premiership in 2020-21.

The Redcaps agonisingly fell short last season against Stirling, however, they have bounced back with another consistent campaign. Six players remain from Mt Lofty’s premiership victory, namely Neis-Beer, Bradley Hutton, Josh Healey, Max Hawke, Dave Bennett and Adam Carthew. Healey outlined the Redcaps are excited to be back in the grand final against a quality SCIB outfit. “It’s good the best two teams are in the grand final and it should be a great game,” commented vice-captain Healey.

One of the key inclusions for Mt Lofty this season has been Josh Mitchell, who previously played with Kensington and was involved in four premierships. Mitchell also represented this season’s successful HCA Meyer Shield side and has been wicket-keeper over recent rounds. “Not only on field but off-field Josh has been massive and knows a lot about the game and strengthens the top five in our batting,” suggested Healey.

Mt Lofty didn’t have reigning cricketer of the year Adam Carthew until after mid-season and also had inconsistency with its line up. Once the Redcaps got continuity within the side, they haven’t looked back. “It’s nice to host the grand final and obviously we will take any advantage we can get playing home,” noted Healey. “Our batting is strong in the top five and also right the way through and with the ball we are sticking to our plans. “In previous seasons we have had clear standouts with the ball, but this season we have spread the load.”

SCIB haven’t tasted premiership glory since 2004-05, however, it does possess grand final experience, with eight of the 11 players previously contesting A-grade grand finals. “Most of us have played in multiple grand finals so we have experience in big games, but we could never get past Meadows in those grand finals,” outlined SCIB captain Adam Shearwood. “It’s just exciting to be back here playing in the grand final.” It’s been a dream season for SCIB, and by its own admission, would have never expected to reach a grand final, considering an eighth-placed finish last season with four wins. In what has been an incredible rise up the ladder, SCIB didn’t win a match in 2020-21 in A-grade and played A2- grade in 2019-20, now the club is back at the top of the pecking order in A-grade. “The lads just give a consistent effort each week and we always give ourselves a chance to be in the game,” noted Shearwood. “Last year we felt as though we showed huge improvement but lost a lot of close games. “This season we have managed to win those close contests and it just took winning them early to give us the confidence.

“The development of Aaron Thompson as a gun batter and Beau Thomas as the leader of the bowling attack has been a massive reason for the improvement.” Shearwood admitted the coming assignment against Mt Lofty is a huge task, considering the Redcaps have beaten SCIB twice at Heathfield Oval in the past month. “Mt Lofty are a quality side and we understand we are massive underdogs, however, this group every time they are doubted or it looks like we are done, keep responding. “I’ve got no doubt we will put up a huge fight. “A huge aspect will be how we field as we can’t afford to give any chances as we did last weekend. “With the bat, someone in the top four needs to step up and make a big score and to be honest 30s and 40s don’t win you games. “We just need to be super disciplined with the ball, if we can get past the top five of Mt Lofty, the other lads haven’t batted for a while now so we need to put them under pressure.”

Leading performers statistical slant: Mt Lofty: Jordan Neis-Beer 557 runs at 42.85; Josh Mitchell 491 at 35.07; Connor Milde 22 wickets. SCIB: Adam Shearwood 736 runs at 40.89;

Had a hit yesterday with a mate at Yarrambat. Don’t think I can recall playing that badly for a long, long time. Hate to think what I would have scored. I actually stopped scoring after the 8th hole. Ran out of lead in the pencil!!

I have a few rounds coming up so was hoping to find some form.

The only good news it I’ve gotten the bad (******* awful) round out of the way. I hope!

Playing Schedule

Sun April 7th. Eastwood.

Fri April 12th. Hidden Valley. Bragging rights match v Corona Junior.

Sun April 21st. Cape Schank.

Re: Bucket List Trips/Holidays

Mrs Boon and I both turn 50 next year, she has a desire to see her Greek homeland and I do with my Welsh heritage however I'm shit on a plane so there's no way I'm doing the 14 hours from Adelaide to Dubai etc so we've hatched a plan to execute by the time we are 55.

Adelaide to Singapore and have 1-2 days there then Singapore to Dubai etc and have a day there then onto Amsterdam. That way the flights are no more than the 8 or so hours I can cope with. We can then cross over to the UK, back over the ditch to cover Europe and the Mediterranean before hopping back home. 6-8 weeks at best.

We've done a few Bali and Thailand trips, I want to get back to NZ with her ( been over for work ) at some stage and we're nearly locked in for Vietnam next year with some mates.

I have no desire for the US at all. I don't run fast enough to outrun bullets.

I'd rather get the plane ride over & done with in 1 hit. Understand what you are saying, but it's the extra time in airports, in and out of hotels. Stuff that. I've done the Melb to LA flight before 14 odd hours. Eat, drink, watch a movie, read a book, walk around the cabin, have another drink. Will do Business Class most likely - better wine, better food, and a bed.

I've been to NZ a heap of times with work, so same there, like to take my wife there for a look.

We will probably do Bali in the next couple of years. I actually made the suggestion to the entire family on Christmas day, only to be gazzumped by news of a baby on the way......so back burner it goes.

In terms of the bullets...... I think I only need to be faster than the average Joe Yanky....... backing myself in, in that race!

Re: Daily Golf - Where you are playing and how you go

Eastwood - Sunday April 7th.

The Melbourne Forecast for Sunday. Chance of showers, most likely in the morning or afternoon ($ each way) 1-3mm.

Left home at 9.45 for the 50 minute drive to the course. Went through 10mm of rain on the way! As this round is part of a social group I had pre-paid $60 for the round. As I pulled into the car park, I was thinking oh well, at least I can get my $$ back, then go find a pub.....

Sadly all the boys where keen to play, even as we stood on the tee in the light, and sometimes heavier than light rain.

Played off the 10th tee. Opening drive sprayed right onto the 18th fairway. Punch out back onto the correct fairway. This is a very steep slope right to left. As I am picking my way through the trees, I have slipped over, going down hard on my backside. Actually winded my like a Kosi Pickett bump.
Double Bogey. Find the fairway on 11.... only to stuff the hole. Scrub. Drive on 12 pulled way left. Never found it. Scrub. Pipe one down 13, only to hit a 3 wood (going for the par 5 in 2) ******* sideways into the trees. 2 shots to get out Scrub.

Trees right off the tee on 14th, sneak one through to 100 out. Pull Wedge long left. 1 Point
Trees right of tee on 15th, punch out sideways. 210 still to go, 3 wood, leaks right. 2 duffed chips. Scrub. Can't actually recall the 16th.

17th slight downhill par 3, playing into the breeze (this hole set atop a hill) 5 iron struck nicely. Hits the front of the green (false front), spins back off the green. Up and down par.

18th - should have hit 3 wood from tee. Spray driver right onto the 10th fairway (the fairway I didn't find when I played that hole) clear shot over trees 100M wedge. Blade it into the trees, hack into bunker. I would still be in that bunker now if I didn't pick it up. Scrub.

1st - Smoke Stealth down the left centre. This is a downhill-ish hole of 365. I have 100M in. Smooth Wedge, pulled long left. Lucky to avoid the water, up & down for Bogey.

2nd par 3. 145. 6 iron left into Bunker. Scrub.

3rd - Drive pulled left but not too bad, rolls into water that you can't see off tee. Scrub.

4th - Drive leaks right into tree line. Knock it out. 8 iron onto green. 2 putt Bogey. Rain has returned.

5th - Pull drive left, hack out. Smash 3 wood (another par 5) blind shot over hill. Run's out of fairway. Hack out from trees. 1 Point.

6th - Drive right side of fairway. 5 iron to uphill to green comes up short. Chip on. Then stand under umbrella as large rain squall passes through.....for 10 minutes. Not passing. Green is right by clubhouse. **** this I 'm done. 2 off us walk in the other 2 silly pricks keep going.

Get drenched trying to get clubs & buggy into car. Take shirt off as its soaked. Through on a dry Jumper on. Head to pro shop to buy a shirt. They are all shithouse. Head into club rooms, any food? No, sorry! 2 Carltons & I head off.

And now for the scary part....... That's still better golf than the week before.

Grudge match with Son this Friday. I am due to play a bit better......I bloody hope so.

Re: HFL Division 1 (Central)

Yep agree with everything above. Seems like what’s happened is common with large projects in that the people designing the facility have never played the targeted sport in their life and don’t understand the intricacies of the facilities required. Then to double down on that and arrogantly refuse consultancy from the HFL, MBFC and from what I’ve heard a certain high profile head curator in charge of the best surface in the country and one of the best in the world at AO.

They got a lick of the ice cream with gather round and have completely turned its back on this league and the country people it was designed for and now have their hands out. Up there with the highway council rates in the country, I think they will be fine without the money they believe they’re “owed”.

And now the Barossa has a venue suitable for Gather round, they wont be licking that ice cream anymore. Ill give it two years and it will only be suitable for making hay
That piece of land, and trust me I know the former owner, was no good for growing hay before development!

Re: Daily Golf - Where you are playing and how you go

Grudge match review?
Or has that been overlooked due to the result....

No mate.... I've been crook as a dog since Saturday arvo. Shocking head cold, and bronchitis. Just out of bed for the first time this morning.

Hidden Valley. Course presented in excellent condition. We were off at 10.30am, they did have senior pennant comp on earlier in the morning. We basically had the front 9 to ourselves. Hit a bit of traffic on the back nine, but nothing to cause any issue.

The lad wanted to hit bucket of balls to warm up. We shared them, I probably hit 25, he hit the remaining 50.

I invited him to open proceedings on the first hole, and having pretty well smashed driver on the range, he duck hooks it into the junk. Lost ball on the first! I popped one out right a bit. I make bogey, he makes double. I am 1 up after the first! I stone cold top my drive off the 2nd, much to the mirth of Junior. I then top, or stuff the next 2 as well, take a 9 on the par 5, and we are back to square. The 3rd hole halved in bogies.

The 4th is a nice little par 3, 145M slightly downhill to a large green. bunkers right. Junior is away, sticks it pin high right, avoiding the bunker but on edge of the green. I hit mine with a little pull. Pin high left. Get down to the green I am am looking to repair my pitch mark. Can't find it, what the..... then I can see I have landed on the replaced hole (yesterdays pin) bang in the centre. I claim its a hole in one. Just one day late! We halve in pars.

Junior makes par on the 5th, to my double to take the lead. We both stuff the 6th with doubles.

The 7th hole is a 295M slight uphill Par 4. Junior crunches it, 15M short of green. I drag left off the tee, under trees. His par, beats my bogey.

8th hole is a 523M par 5.... that's from the white tees (It would have to be 540-550 from the Blues).... I have a horrow show - 2 rocks in the drink. Junior doubles but that 3 shots better than me.

9th hole - Par 3 120M water carry. I miss the green right, he sticks it on. He pars, I bogey. He is 4 up. I'm in all sorts. As he will miss his cricket clubs preso night while in Melbourne, he records a message to be played Sat night (he won the club champ award) on the 9th tee.....

10th hole, par 5 - halved in bogeys. I had him too, he blew his second shot way right, but recovered.

11th hole, 317M downhill par 4. I hit a decent drive, he blows it 50 M past mine. I hit the green, he misses (hah). My birdie putt lips out... he bogies I get 1 back.

12th hole, 444M par 5. I remember this hole from last time, I am not going for it in 2. It really narrows around the green, and it guarded by some bloody deep bunkers. Junior in a bit of trouble left. I am just short for 3. I chip up, and take a piece of the hole (another birdie missed). My par to his double - I am on a comeback.......As you leave the 12th green there is a sign "Amen Corner"..... we are about to enter the toughest stretch of holes on the course.

13th hole. 359 Par 4 - Water Carry, bite off as much as you like. Junior bites of a fair chunk, ball is dry. I find the water comfortably... really comfortably, missed land by 50 M. His double beats my quadruple.

14th, lovely par 4, water left and short of the green. He find water, but hits a great second (third) shot, we halve in bogeys.

15th 495M par 5 - Double water carry. This hole has got me both times. Junior makes a good Par here. My 8 is unsurprising.

16th Straight forward Par 3. Junior hits green & 3 putts. I am coming home in an ambulance by this stage, double bogey.

17th - 385M Par 4. We both hit good drives, mine is 250, he has me covered by 40. I miss green left, he misses green right. Hole halved in bogeys.

18th - 128M Par 3. Island Green. Playing into a slight head wind. Junior drowns his first ball, Junior drowns his second ball, eventually finds dry land (bunker). I pull off tee, but somehow find the island. The island is mainly green, bunkers left, centre short & right. Also on the left a few small palms. I am in them, dead. I make 5, to his 8. Junior wins the day comfortably. Who'd of thought the young athlete, would beat the fat old drunk!

All in all, not particularly great golf by either of us, but we had a great day. Junior says best course he has ever played. It's in my top 15 or so. Adjourned for a bevvie and a late lunch. Said it before on here, if you come to Melbourne, try to get onto Hidden Valley, its worth a look.

I am playing Cape Schank this Sunday, so long as this head cold clears up some time soon.

Re: Things that you rate!

Working from home today, just had a spare 20 minutes or so. Decided to go through my fairly small coin collection, to see if I had anything of worth.

I don't go out of my way looking for them, just whenever I get a commemorative coin, I chuck it into a bag. Been doing it for 30 + years though....

The summary - The Australian Coins (and 1 x $1 brown note) total Value a tick over $200.

The big surprise. I went to the UK in 1977, this year was the Queen Liz Silver Jubilee. Somewhere in my travels I picked up a Silver Jubilee coin. Its even in a protective sleeve, never been in circulation. Value - $500.

I'll Take that!

Good fun this.
I thought the subject matter was actually pretty boring. Its the fact I waited 57 years I thought was of minor interest.

As a clean skin, always fascinated when someone gets a tattoo. Could never bring myself to do one, not from a pain point of view, but could never decide what to get.
Very much why I waited this long. Considered kids names, Premierships etc...... but really couldn't land on any one thing that I was keen on. The Corona Logo was on my mind, but got benched. What I have, is something that I enjoy, its personal in a way to me, and meaningless to practically anyone else. Died in the wool golfers will get it though.

Re: Daily Golf - Where you are playing and how you go

Cape Schanck

I will address the Elephant in the room straight up........ no I didn't have one.

Its a ******* long way from my place. 1Hr; 35Mins. In light traffic. 7.30 am tee time. Out of bed 4.30am Sunday, left home at 5.15am.

Opening few holes, gentle, even friendly. The first thing that strikes me is the size of the greens. They are massive. A couple of bogey's to start, should have made par out of one of them.

3rd hole - long par 3 to a massive 2 tiered green. One of the guys in my group has a rangefinder. Pin set on top tier, its 207 to the flag!
4th hole, another par 3 a bit more reasonable at 137 from the Blue markers.
5th hole 348M par 4. I find both fairway & green in reg for a par. 6th hole bogey. Not much to report on holes 7, 8 & 9.... not many points that's for sure. A few poor swings kreeping in though. So far hardly a breathe of wind. A few holes, the black championship tees are well behind where we are playing from. So it's not playing all that long. Typical resort type golf.

Things change on the back 9. Wind picks up & the course gets considerably harder. The par 4 - 15th hole, the #1 rated hole in particular. Hit off from an elevated tee (great ocean views, and of the National course next door), to a fairway sloping left to right. Then an uphill approach that has to be seen to believe it. What a hole. Only 318M but plays so much harder than that. The last 3 holes no scores recorded. I am hitting a few good shots, but by this stage cannot string 2 good, or even Ok shots together.

So while I take out the NAGA on the day, I still enjoyed the round, and hit a few decent shots along the way.

Just have to keep working on the game, it will come back.
