Last team to lose their first game in a season

(This was posted elsewhere, and it's now been updated here):
I started to compile this, looking to see if there was a team which ended a teams winning streak to the season more that others. What had me surprised is the low amount of occasions where the last team to be defeated in a season ended up winning the flag in the end. The premier of the season is marked ^ and the table excludes occasions where the two or three remaining undefeated teams lost in the same round:

!North were 2nd on the ladder before the first defeat, owing to Central having a 3-1 record with a better percentage
~Sturt were last, and brought up their first win by defeating the only undefeated side
*In 1998, Port, West and Sturt were all 4-0 and had losses to North, Eagles and Central respectively in the next round. This is the only occasion three teams were left undefeated, then in the next round, all lost.
#Technically Port were unbeaten to this point, however, they lost their opening round win due to playing an unregistered player.
The last to be defeated besides Port, is shown below that entry (West)
$Port went throughout the minor round undefeated; won the Semi Final, however lost the last two matches of the season to West, to hand West the flag
%Port were 2nd on the ladder before the first defeat, owing to Norwood having a 3-1 record with a better percentage

Re: AFL Round 23

Once again, shows how much of a joke the AFL is...bad enough not having the best equipment for a score review, but not automatically reviewing it for every score, not just goals - why use it at all if you aren't going to use it for everything? It may mean you have to stop the game and restart it at the centre in a situation like that, but so be it. Either that or ditch the score review and go back to how it was.

Re: Preliminary Finals

Another umpiring brain fade - the ball looked like it bounced on the line twice, so why was it balled up?

Re: Mens ICC Cricket World Cup, India 2023.

I'm trying to look for something to confirm, but on the Cricinfo commentary, someone said it's the first time in ODI history that everyone in an innings made it into double figures.

I heard them say that, not sure if it was referring to just World Cup or any ODI ??

Meanwhile Conway and Ravindra are plastering the Pom piechuckers to all parts as they've raced to 1/138 after only 17 overs   According to Cricinfo it is the first time in ODI history (not just world cups) that every player in the 11 has made double figures.

I was trying to work out how to display it on Statsguru using Advanced Search, but in the stats article on the match, they posted this link:

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;groupby=innings;orderby=innings;runsmin1=10;runsval1=runs;template=results;type=batting

It shows that there were 5 previous instances of 10 players in an ODI scoring 10 or more, the most recent being earlier this year by Australia, where Smith was the only one who didn't (scored 0):

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-in-india-2022-23-1348637/india-vs-australia-3rd-odi-1348658/full-scorecard

Re: Mens ICC Cricket World Cup, India 2023.

All good so far - India 3/10...but I feel they must get past Jadeja before they reach 125-150, cause how often do we see anyone down to him rescue their side...

Mitch Marsh dropping simple catch when Kohli was on 12 was the turning point, would have been 4/20. Should have been Alex Carey's catch

I still would have expected India to win, even at 4/20 - after all, it was only 200 they needed. Need to grasp all chances though, with so little to play with.

Absolutely. If anyone doesn't like the laws, campaign to have them changed/rewritten, instead of hiding behind the 'spirit of the game' line.

Re: Mens ICC Cricket World Cup, India 2023.

I thought that AB de Villiers vs West Indies 8 years ago was the pinnacle of ODI hitting...now I think has been passed. The match situation was completely different, plus de Villiers had the added bonus of being on two legs, rather than none. it's probably best to go searching for adjectives in the dictionary to come up with a summary of that innings. Seeing the highlights made me laugh in amazement, and all up until then the Afghanis were that semi finals material...but it happens to even some of the best bowling attacks.

No player before Maxwell had scored a double-century while batting outside of top-four even in List A cricket.

Another amazing stat is that the previous highest 8th wicket partnership in ODI cricket was just 138*

That's in Australian matches only isn't it - I don't know if that matters in Indian matches, cause they win on the bit either way

So, Head couldn't play in India? I wonder who was involved in that decision before the first Test earlier this year still regret leaving Head out? Or are they so up themselves they don't care because they can, uh, Pat themselves on the back because they left him in the squad this time?

Kaur v Healy today was absorbing
The 4 overthrows Kaur gave away and appeal for Obstucting the field was shocking on 2 counts, the throw and appeal
To quote Lisa Sthalekar "it wouldn't happen in the womens game". When I heard that comment, Harmanpreet was the player I immediately thought of.

Labuschagne takes a single of the last ball of the 10th over, but Billings faces the first ball of the next over

Confirming. The final ball of the 10th over, Labuschagne scored a single to retain the strike. First ball of the 11th, Billings faced up! Not sure how that happened without anyone noticing. that's what threw our scoring and comms off. The batters walked to the wrong ends after drinks

Imagine if the IPL auction was held tomorrow, they would have been going crazy over Brown - nek minnit 25 crore richer. And of course, after all the hype about the spinners, the two pace bowlers have the best economy rate in this game.

No shame in losing to a bowling performance like that. The IPL franchises will be circling like vultures over S Joseph.

29 times now that a Test match has been decided by 20 runs or less (first time an 8 run margin has been recorded). Australia has a 6-15 record in such matches.

Has there been a batsman as tall as Cam Green who has been successful in the past. I’ve been trying to rack my brain for one. He always looks stiff and awkward like a tail ender. Is it possible to be too tall to be a good bat?

I guess people define successful in different ways, but Tony Greig comes to mind.

Looked like when England didn't appeal when Steve Waugh nicked one behind at the MCG in 2002. Then when the replay came up on the screen they go to appeal, but the umpire said 'too late'.

Interesting stat from Cricinfo is that there were 13 bowlers in the match who got a wicket, the equal most in Test history.
NZ: Henry, O'Rourke, Kuggeleijn, Ravindra in the 1st, then two others in the 2nd being Southee and Phillips
Aust: Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, Marsh, Lyon in the 1st, then two others in the 2nd being Head and Green
