Re: Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

As valleys was tied up at a prior engagement I’ll do my best to deputise in his notable absence from the match and post game summary.

Essendon’s scouts did their homework on Port by closely reviewing the Adelaide game, there is no doubt. Both sides stifled the Port run by not allowing the “out the back” player to be free.

As Adelaide managed to keep key playmakers in Hartlett, Broadbent and Polec quiet, so too did Essendon. What this then did was apply more pressure on the likes of Boak, Wines and Ebert to win contested ball and use it well inside the contest as opposed to the dish to outside runners and those who sit behind the midfield contests, mainly the three mentioned above ( Hartlett, Broadbent and Polec )

Essendon also tackled with constant endeavour to add physical and perceived pressure to Port’s midfield.

Again, Wingard and Monfries had a quiet night in conditions that you would think would have suited both players. Herein lies the reason I think they have both been quiet, Trengove going down. From half time of the Adelaide game any moment in time where the opponent has had the run of play Port have had to send Westhoff back. Now this is not strange, but over the last 12 weeks it hasn’t been too often that he has had to go back there as Trengove has been foiling forward sorties from the opposition and creating ground balls for the likes of Hartlett, Broadbent and Polec to gather while Ebert, Boak and others spread to create run forward.

So now the back half is under pressure, the midfield can’t spread as hard and because of that there’s more contested ball and less uncontested to utilise our run. More contested ball, more body on body and are much publicised last half run is stifled through sheer physical pressure.

Ports best :

Robbie Gray – Stood out with his clean hands and stoppage work ( 30 disposals, 4 clearances, 2 tackles, 1 goal, 3 I50 ) on a night made for the little blokes. He’s been the real standout for Port this year with consistent efforts in almost every match. He gets attention, every week, but he is shining in his role playing further up the ground as a now mid/forward as opposed to a forward/mid.

Hamish Harlett – I know I mentioned above his influence was limited ( 29 disposal, 8 clearances, 1 R50, 5 I50 ) and his numbers suggest he had a solid game, he did. The real stat there is the 1 rebound 50, he’s been closer to 3 or 4 a week and having the midfield under pressure drew him away from the D50 where he has done much of his best work.

Cam O’Shea – In a good sign for Port O’Shea had arguably his best game at AFL level. ( 28 disposal, 7 R50, 5 I50 ) Coming in to cover the loss of Trengove/Carlile he stood up and showed he can play solid defensive footy. His disposal efficiency ( 67% ) although not competition best was perhaps above average for a bloke who can be suspect by foot. He made sure his spot was safe for the nextg two weeks at least.

Travis Boak – Again led from the front and won some important touches in the third quarter ( along with R.Gray ) to get Port back in the contest. 22 disposals, 2 clearances, 3 I50 and a goal are not massive numbers, but he was there when Port needed a player to get a hand in and spoil a Essendon clearance or take a mark outside a stoppage. One of the few mids to work hard all night a spread when he had a chance.

Of the remainder Jack Hombsch was sound, as was Jonas and Ollie Wines.

Port won possessions, contested possessions, clearances, hit outs, I50, had 25 shots to 22. Essendon laid 96 tackles to 62. That all reads like a Port win, more of the ball, Essendon chased all night. Not so.

Re: Round 16 - live scores, results & conversing.

I really only see Lake place his thumb around Petries throat very late in the wrestle, perhaps only moments before reinforcements arrive.

Prior to that it looks like Lake has his thumb tucked into the palm of his hand and is pushing down on the collar bone area of Petrie. Upon Petries "second" wriggle across the face of Lake with his hand does Lake really engage what would be described as a choke.

That's how I see it, anyway.

LOL - I read benny post ^^^ here and just had to read the lead up....

What gets me is the "church" somehow seem to think they own "marriage".

I got married in the ballroom at the Palais at Semaphore by a civil celebrant without any religious connotations whatsoever and my marriage is no less relevant, important or binding than a full blown religious ceremony in a church.

I had to laugh, open up to same sex marriage and people will be marrying dogs, inanimate objects even!

So tell me again why two sane and consenting adults can't choose to marry in the same civil ceremony that two thirds of marriages currently consist of?

Because other people want to bang dogs?

Re: Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

=D> =D>

Another thing the club has simply got right.

PORT ADELAIDE was honoured last night to launch the club’s Reconciliation Action Plan aimed at building on the club’s existing range of Aboriginal community programs and initiatives.

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch officially launched the plan before 540 guests at the club’s pre-game event at the Adelaide Oval.

Mr Koch said the Reconciliation Action Plan is designed to help build better relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for the benefit of all Australians.

“As a club we see the launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan as another significant stage in our commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” Mr Koch said.

“Already we have a number of programs in place, most notably the Aboriginal Power Cup and Aboriginal AFL Academy, which promote equality in health, education and employment for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“But we see our current range of programs as just a starting point. We have a strong will to do so much more.

“Port Adelaide is determined to expand on our existing community programs and play a leadership role in remote communities throughout the Central Corridor of Australia.

“These communities include the Maralinga and APY Lands who both took part in the curtain-raiser prior to our game last night.

“Our club is inspired by the many opportunities that exist to promote and respect the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan is a way of capturing and documenting our vision.”

Through Reconciliation Australia’s RAP Impact Measurement Report from September 2013, Reconciliation Australia has established that RAP organisations have:

• Employed over 25,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
• Purchased $81 million worth of goods and services from Supply Nation accredited businesses
• Provided $37.8 million towards education scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
• Provided $22.9 million worth of pro-bono support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations or communities

Reconciliation Australia’s survey also found that RAP employees are:

• Less prejudiced - 9 per cent of RAP employees versus 70 per cent of the general population
• More likely to trust Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples - 71 per cent of RAP employees versus 13 per cent of the general population
• More likely to be proud of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures - 77 per cent of RAP employees versus 51 per cent of the general population

Mr Koch said this data indicated that Reconciliation Action Plans are helping practical actions deliver positive change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“We strongly believe that through our Reconciliation Action Plan we can take a leadership role in changing attitudes and increasing the understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s history and culture,” Mr Koch said.

“These changes in attitudes are what drives reconciliation and demonstrates our nation’s progress toward Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“We encourage everyone involved in the Port Adelaide football community to embrace these changes and live the intrinsic values that are the cornerstone of our Reconciliation Action Plan.”

I heard Betts may have had some personal issues during the week and the club decided, despite his 200th AFL game, to not "put him up" to the media and give him a low key build up.

Re: Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

I'm not going to get all down trodden on the back of three weeks of footy after the 12-13 week period prior to that, no chance.

I am however going to get upset at the side for showing no will at the contest to turn things around after half time. Early in the second the lose Richmond players around the outside of the contest were killing us. As such, I'd imagine Ken Hinkley would have lost his **** at half time, I know I was!

To then come out and not change one of the things you can control, manning up at stoppages, was simply unacceptable.

The back half bled and bled badly, they will while we miss our key pillars in Trengove and Carlile. With Redden and Renouf lost to season ending injuries we have no 195cm+ back ups to play forward or in the rucks to help Lobbe and release Westhoff back. While Westhoff was back yesterday, we held sway, as soon as he went forward, we bled.

That's where our squad is at though. The likes of Hawthorn can cover the loss of Gibson and Lake by having their midfield hold the opposition in Hawthorns forward half, as they did Friday night. Port let Richmond out far too easily yesterday.

The likes of Fremantle can do the same and Sydney rely on the star studded forward half and midfield. So, your defence is only as good as your midfield is at helping them and our midfield is doing the back half no favours.

Butcher continues to disappoint, Mitch Harvey and Mason Shaw might just get a gig this week to allow Hinkley the luxury of keeping two talls in the F50 while Westhoff floats back. But Ken has made it clear, you demand through SANFL form to be picked and you'll be picked. Sam Gray and Ben Newton testament to that, you simply won't come in to make up a spot for making up a spots sake. So then this comes down to how head strong and set in his ways Hinkley and the coaching staff are. Structure Vs Form. Will be an interesting week at selection.

One thing for sure is the midfield need to pull their finger out and help the skipper and Ollie Wines. These two have carried the midfield for a few weeks now and the in and out form of Polec, Harlett, Broadbent ( better yesterday ), Wingard, White and to a lesser extent Robbie Gray needs to stop. If they continue to allow the opposition 60 F50 entries as they did yesterday then our best defensive structure will suffer, let alone our currently undermanned one.

So the blokes in the midfield who are struggling need to turn in around in both aspects of the midfield mix, the defensive and attacking side of their games.

By attacking, I don't just mean running forward of the contest, that only works when we get first hands on the ball. I mean attacking the contest like Travis Boak does with an intent to win the ball and desire to beat his opponent one-on-one.

Big week ahead against Melbourne who nearly unravelled us in Alice Springs. Which in all honest is about the time we started to look unsettled by losing Monfries, White, Boak and Polec to rolled ankles in the following weeks then Trengove to a long term ankle and Carlile and Monfries with hamstrings.

Top 2 is out of reach now I think, top 4 is still an out side chance but so is missing the 8 altogether if we don't roll the Dees this week.

The week off before Collingwood away and Sydney at home. Melbourne is a must win, Collingwood ( we should have Carlile back ) is winnable in the form they are in and Sydney, well, its Sydney.

With Gold Coast away, Carlton here and Fremantle away I cant write down any of these games as certain wins in our current form.

If we can beat Melbourne, Carlton and one of Gold Coast / Collingwood we will end up on 15 wins and 5th/6th.

Clearly, based on all these figures, there is nothing to worry about & everything is fine.
Fantastic.
Crowds are up, Revenue is Up, Commercial Media Coverage is far better, etc.
Any questions regarding Integrity or Compromise were clearly 'humbug'.
SANFL Footy (since 1991 at least) has never been healthier.
A big thank you to Trigg, Koch, Olsen & the CEOs - you tried to tell us it would be better & we didn't listen.
Well, its all good.
I'm sure the CEOs will be laughing all the way to the bank, come AGM time, patting each other on the back.

Not sure anyone said that was the case. Just seems those predicting the end aren't as right ( or righteous ) as they thought they were going to be.

Re: Average and median crowd figures to Round 8

A few points:

This year the disparity between mean and median has expanded significantly, presumably due to the large crowd for the country based Crows V Port game.

Average crowds have been consistantly falling since round 4.

Possible reasons - the novelty factor of AFL reserves is now over
- weather conditions have deteriorated.

The Eagles are the meanest crowd. Always have been. :D

Re: Predictions - and discussion - in lead up to 2014 season

I find it gobsmacking that we have played half rat power all year and we're still sitting 4th. If we can peak at the right time, who knows what could happen. I definitely believe we have the cattle to make the big dance but at the end of the day, we probably don't deserve to make it, especially the way we have been playing.

I think the top 3 have your measure, I think your about on par with the Kangas and Port and experience at crunch time against either Port or the 'Roos would get you over the line into a Prelim.

Saying that, if you end up 5th and get a Essendon, Collingwood or Adelaide first week you could be out there such is the even season we it is.

I think the Catters will be around week two of finals at least though.

After 14 seasons at the elite level, 2004 Premiership player and former Port Adelaide captain Dom Cassisi will pull on his boots for the last time this weekend.

Cassisi will play one final game - against Melbourne at 12.40pm on Sunday at Adelaide Oval - giving him the opportunity to farewell the supporters who have been a fundamental part of his day-to-day life since he was drafted to Port Adelaide with pick 50 in the 2000 National Draft.

Cassisi leaves the game happy - with his career and where the club is at.

"To win a premiership and wear the captain’s number one guernsey is just such an honour," Cassisi said.

"[But] I think it’s time for me to hand the baton to the next group of young players coming through.

"I leave the game really happy and content, particularly with where the club is at right now."

Re: Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

Well, didn’t we steal that one! Not that I’m unhappy with a win, but it again raised a few questions about this playing group.

Melbourne are much improved under Paul Roos and were, in many ways, the first team to dismantle Port back some weeks ago in Alice Springs. Although they didn’t get the chocolates in the Red Centre they did give other sides the blue print for how to beat Port. Keep Broadbent, Hartlett and Polec from running across the half back line unmanned, make the midfield a congested mess with up to 30 players around the ball and when Port do gain possession you make sure your defenders staying off the ball spread across to the “open” side of the ground denying Port the space to run and attack. Other teams have since successfully used a similar formula, Essendon especially.

Another thing Melbourne did well yesterday was push the ball from stoppages to Port’s attacking side. Port like to dish the ball to the defensive side at contests, spread from there with run from behind. That’s when we are playing well. Melbourne used this to their advantage yesterday knowing on their defensive side of the contest they could have room to move then use the ball, they did and they did.

With Trengove and Carlile out Port are relying on Jonas, Hombsch and O’Shea to play as the key talls. While they have a disadvantage in the air, the coaching staff have tried to use the speed on the ground as an advantage.

What we’ve seen for 3 weeks now is Port get the ball in the back half, Harlett, Broadbent and Polec get manned up immediately by anyone in their general area. So Port try to take advantage of this by having Pittard, Hombsch and O’Shea run the ball out of defence. Now this can create a couple of issues.

It can throw the opposition structure out as key forwards chase our key defenders up the ground, but they’ve learnt to stay at home and maintain their structure. Essendon, Richmond and Melbourne all did the same thing. It also means O’Shea and Pittard ( despite their very best efforts ) are running and delivering the ball from defence. I have alot of time for both of these guys and expect them both to have long careers down back, but with all their best intentions they do not possess the foot skills of the other three noted above. So Port’s key backs are now out of position, the oppositions key forwards are “structured up” and a turn over from Port turns into opposition goals.

With Trengove and Carlile offering marking targets on the way out of defence the key forwards have no option but to chase them, their structure breaks down and the likes of Westhoff and Schulz aren’t up on the wing looking for an avenue to goal. Crikey we need those two back.

Again yesterday the man-child Ollie Wines led the way in midfield contests in the first half. He has carried our midfield ( with Boak ) for several weeks. No surprises with the size of his legs, he could carry anything!
Wines is a beast on the ground, strong enough through the core getting tackled to get his arms free and sticks tackles as tackles should be stuck. He would be, IMO, in out top 3 of our B&F at the moment and could conceivably win it if he maintains this form all year.

My top 5 :

Ollie Wines – 26 disposals, 11 contested, 7 clearances, 9 tackles, 5 I50. Another game where this kid stood out as the best contested ball player on the ground. He ripped the ball out of plenty of early contests, held Melbourne up numerous times as they looked to “get out” and was, IMO, the best player on the ground.

Cam O’Shea – 25 disposals, 12 marks, 3 R50. Although he burnt us a couple of times with his foot skills, he also saved us a couple of times late in the game with an important spoil or mark. Been in our best 2 of the last 3 weeks and has cemented his spot in the side. Will be interesting to see who goes out the side with the return of Carlile and Trengove, for mine, O’Shea isn’t one to go.

Robbie Gray – 26 disposals, 16 contested, 8 clearances, 6 tackles, 4 I50. Really has been in outstanding form this year, a certain AA and has his lateral movement back, he sides steps players with ease and is spending more time in the midfield. A genuine star.

Paul Stewart – 8 disposal, 2 goals, 100% disp. Efficiency, 3 tackles. Although he only had the 8 touches, his 2 goals were very important, the flexibility he offers the side as a third marking target and his 3 tackles were all inside Port’s F50, 2 of which resulted in goals. In a close contest that had plenty of errors by foot and hand, 100% efficiency and 2 goals was very, very important.

Aaron Young – 16 disposals, 4 clearances, 4 tackles, 1 goal. He’s been or sub numerous times in recent weeks and this week got his chance to run out a full game. His numbers might not look huge but he did more than enough to not only keep his spot in the line-up but push for regular selection.

Once again though White ( 9 touches and subbed ) , Polec ( 8 touches @ 50% ) and Wingard ( 13 touches, 1 goal ) had quiet days. Wingard got in amongst it early but faded, while White and Polec were soundly beaten. These three have had the spotlight on them for three weeks now and really need to respond.

The week off could not come at a better time.

Re: Has Mick Malthouse lost the plot?

Fired another shot at Stevens Friday night I see.
Mick loves Stevo.... ;)
Where does Mick get off?
He treats most people with no respect but expects everyone to respect him and kiss his ar$e!!
3/4 of the media are scum, good on Mick for getting into them. Wish more coaches would get stuck into them

Fair cop.

The media are only driven by the public's desire to know every gory detail and ask every question under the sun, be it stupid or not. If people didn't buy papers, subscribe to Fox Footy, buy Inside Footy etc etc there would be no media, but it's us, the footy fan, that drives the media.

Mick's an arsehole. He may or may not be one of the greatest coaches ( I rate him highly as a coach ) but as a bloke and some one to talk to I'd rather spend time discussing world affairs with Taylor Walker than talk to Mick.

Or are they scum because they keep asking what you blokes did and you keep saying we don't know?

Re: I need to know....

Quick google search suggests yes. Should I toy with him?

Absolute yes and yes!

Exactly the same as one my boss received when selling his classic Fiat 500 "Bambino" about 3 months ago. Now this car was in all reality pretty rare, so to just buy it sight unseen at $15,000 was a little strange.

Play with* this clown.

Re: Trade Period needs / Your Teams Trade Bait

Mixed thoughts. He's the player every club has had.

Burst onto the scene, kicked a handful a couple of times towards the end of 2012 ( 6 goals from 6 kicks against the Bulldogs ) and then spent much of the lead up to 2013 with a hip injury.

He never really got going last year, physically, and at times when I saw him ( playing for the Magpies and at training ) looked really pretty down. He's a laconic figure at the best of times, but he looked like a bloke who was really struggling to get his body right and was battling with the mental side of that.

As 2013 closed he was getting regular game time at SANFL level, completed a pretty well full pre-season leading into 2014 and really had his opportunity come knocking when Schulz missed some of the pre-season this year. Never took it.

Is he good enough? I did think he was, now I'm not so sure. I was happy to give him the benefit of doubt while his body wasn't right, but since mid-2013 he seems to have had some continuity and hasn't been able to even rip Glenelg apart at SANFL level. He's in a team two games clear on top, plays inside the F50 and can't manage to dominate a game. 30 goals in 12 games isn't a poor return, but his average disposal count would be low.

He can mark the ball, but he can also completely misjudge the flight when he's not on song. His kicking is well documented and really needs to have improved more in his time on an AFL list than it has.

He's tall enough to do ruck chop out duties (197cm) but doesn't seem to be capable of doing so.

He's an interesting case as Port have been able to develop plenty of players in the last 3-4 years, but not him.

So is he good enough? I don't think so. His body now seems to be right, if his head space is also right he really needs to start taking the SANFL by the scruff of the neck and demand AFL selection.

Re: Essendon 2014

Hirds back in town! what should his role be in the final few round/finals? IMO he should stay away from the place let Bomber so what he is doing. The players dont need another side show on the eve of the finals

Me, me, me.

That's what it's about for the golden boy. He'll be straight back in and think he's still the man.

Re: Diary of some pregnant blokes

Time to take a real deep breathe here lads.

Time to focus on what you've got in your mind, check that it is suitable for sending out of your mouth BEFORE you send it out. Extremely important, check it BEFORE it leaves your mind.

Having said that, I wish you all the best for the coming days.

Another tale from the Boon's book of life experiences ;)
sometimes i tend to act a little immaturely, and i thought i'd lighten the mood in relatively early stages of labor... So my wife could still speak...
my wife was leaning over the kitchen bench, i decided a back rub was good thing to do, and as a JOKE i thought i'd replecate some "moves" you may see in grown up films... Obviously with no actual intent, thought it may lighten the mood..... it certainly wasn't my best ideas. however it was the last time i saw my wife smile that night until the birth....
it's a risky move and i certainly don't recomend it

Oh man oh man.....
