By my quick calculation, of the 30 League players that Sturt played in 2014, 17 came through the SFC junior pogram. Kirkwood, Beard and Watt from Port Adelaide, Duldig (Glenelg via the Barossa League) Hinge and Panozzo via Glenelg, Tambling, ex Crows and Rory Taggert recruited from Melbourne F.C. By those figures, the majority of SFC League players come through our junior program.......which makes it, well,,,,,,successful!

P.S Players like Michael Coad (Tumby Bay) Sam Smith (Flagstaff Hill) and Lachlan Medhurst (South East) arrived via country leagues , Tom Bartlett and Jack Kelly (Prince Alfred Old Scholars) I'd reckon most clubs would be content with that sort of ratio e.g 'home grown' vs recruits.

Geez, Heater...don't tell Tom that he was educated at St. Peter's! It'd be like telling an Englishman they fought for the Germans given Prince's hatred of St. Peter's. Believe me, he definitely did not go to St. Peter's, unlike his cousin, James McLeay, who did attend Saints. The Adeliade Uni connection is correct, however...my bad!

I'll get back to you after the AGM ion Monday night on the first part of your post re cost cutting and the turnaround . It would be unfair to do that here right now. In regards to your second point, I don't know. Other than saying that the club's bankers are more than happy with the club's interest and principal payments at present. Which makes the question of the SANFL's guarantee a bit of a non issue - at the moment, of course.

Post AFC/PAFC it has been extremely difficult to find Doctors to assist at SANFL clubs. When I first started at Sturt in 1980, when training was only 2 nights per week and match day, there was a Doctor and a Physiotherapist present at every session. Now, there is no Doctor during the week (this may be different at other clubs) but we do have a Physiotherapist at two training sessions. If the players need to see a Doctor, we receive priority service from SPORTSMED.SA during the week, so, it just means that players need to adjust their schedule during the day (like most of us) instead of having a Doctor provided at training. I wouldn't complain about this service, as our main GP often sees our players during his lunch break or at the end of his consulting list - the man is a champion, albeit a glutton for punishment!

It is a big commitment and unfortunately at our level of sport everything occurs out of hours. In saying that we receive outstanding service from a panel of Doctors/Specialists so that league matches have a Doctor in attendance. Our Doctors have not/would not refuse treatment to an opposition player if it was requested by the opposition club. I do believe, however, that there is a $400 fee (SANFL imposed) if an opposition player is treated by the opposing club doctor.

I would say that all clubs have at least one very experienced trainer. I am supported by a training staff that includes 3 registered physiotherapists who also work as trainers, also a final year medical student and several other physiotherapy students of different year levels. I know that WWT have an experienced HT and also an experienced paramedic. Centrals have an experienced HT. Yes, I've had to deal with dislocated joints (shoulders and fingers) without medical support in the first half of the reserves and other medical emergencies - punctured lungs, etc.

I think you make a great point here - and not just at SANFL level, but especially at lower levels where the culture of voluntary (or peppercorn) work that used to be present seems to be slowly dying away.

Agreed. I'd walk over hot coals for Sturt and it's players. There is such a high reliance on physio students, nowadays, to supplement the training staff. They're gone as soon as their degrees are finished. Some stay for a while, but, in general there is a high turnover. I remember when I first started there were fourteen trainers and they'd all been there for 10 years plus - so much experience!

When I started at the Bays in 1990 most in the league training squad had been doing it for at least 10 years. I think the elast experinced one was 5 years) and they had plenty about 12. Junior head trainer had been doing it for 10 years along with his side kick ( who still helps out with juniors). We also had three Drs who rotated each weekend between home junior games and two at each league game.

Despite studying Sports Science and with my trainers quals I had to wait four years before I could graduate to the league squad. In the old days you ahd to earn your stripes.....

With all clubs looking for volunteers anyone who wants to help out is automatically with the league and reserves.

My personal view is that I don't think that some clubs understand their duty of care responsibilities nor the H.T's role, thinking they can just shake a magical "trainer tree" and hordes will fall from it! Not the case, nowadays. Experience and knowledge in a H.T's position doesn't happen overnight. It's gained over time. And, heck! I'm still learning. The problem is, when something injury wise occurs and you're it - particularly in the first 1/2 of the reserves, the weight of expectation from others kicks in. You're expected (by players and coaches) to be able to deal with dislocated fingers, shoulders and a pneumo-thorax (punctured lung) right now, because, you're the Head Trainer. There are times during the week and at games that I get heartily sick of the sound of my name!

Yes, TRB. David Oatey is Robert's son. He did play at Sturt. and has been at Norwood in various Junior development roles for some time. From my observations, he is a workaholic. It was pleasing to see him win a premiership with Norwood's Under 18's this year. They have been consistent finals participants for many years without getting the chocolates!

Brodie returns to the Club after 8 years and 38 games with the Adelaide Football Club, while Aidan returns after 3 years with Adelaide and the past 2 seasons on Melbourne’s list.


Brodie and Aidan join Dillon Mullins (WWTFC) and Bradley Coulson (PAFC) as new signings to the Club for season 2016. Mullins is a 21 year old 201cm Ruckman who played 1 League game at the Eagles in 2015 and played in back to back Premierships at Reserves level. Coulson played in the Port Adelaide Academy team as a midfielder in 2015 and was a member of the championship winning SA Under 18 team in 2014.

The Club is also happy to announce that current players Ben Hansen and Brad Hartman have committed to season 2016.

Thank-you....I'm flattered. I really felt for the WWT Training Staff after the match on Saturday. Like at most clubs (and I don't expect the punters to know just what goes in to getting these boys out on the ground each week) mine is a labour of love. Endless amounts of massage, treatment, picking them up when they're down emotionally. I'm just wrapped for our players and my club. I'm an SANFL tragic - with or without the two AFL sides. 37 years on, I'm no less enthusiastic!

One big gripe with SANFL Club members now is that that don't feel that being a member actually gives them anything.

I guess the misconception is probably borne from the fact that professional clubs have the luxury of being able to provide the time for players to recuperate, whereas SANFL clubs cannot afford to pay their players for time they may miss from work because they have a stiff calf or whatever. I would say that the facilities and equipment provided by the AFL clubs would surely dwarf what the SANFL clubs have access to also. Please correct me if I am wrong on that.

While I can't speak for other clubs our (Sturt) medical equipment and resources are at the very least equal to or better than AFL clubs. Our players aren't deprived of anything when it comes to the management of their injuries. Certainly, personnel wise we are no worse off.

Nathan Grima is the new Sturt coach!

Sturt Football Club has appointed ex AFL player Nathan Grima as its Senior Coach.

Grima, 33 years, was recently the Senior Coach at Strathmore in the Essendon Football League.

From Launceston Tasmania Grima played for the Tassie Mariners, South Launceston, the Tasmanian Devils and Central District, including their 2007 SANFL premiership. Grima was rookie-listed by North Melbourne in the 2008 AFL Rookie Draft.

In 2009 he was promoted to their North Melbourne's senior list. He went on to play 88 games. He retired due to injury in 2015 returning to play with Essendon in 2016 as a top up player due to the Club's supplement controversy.

Grima has recently returned to Adelaide with his wife Jacinta and two-year-old daughter Amarli. They are also expecting a baby boy any day now.

Sturt President Jason Kilic said the coaching panel assembled to find dual premiership coach Marty Mattner's replacement had no hesitation in offering Grima the role.

“We were extremely impressed with him during the interview process and are confident that he will continue the success the Club has had the last few seasons whilst bringing his own brand of football to the Club,” Kilic said.

Football Manager Chris Trapp said Grima was an
exceptional candidate who presented very well and displayed great enthusiasm for the role.

“Our search was thorough with some very experienced candidates however Grima stood out, possessing an astute football mind and strong personal values.”
Grima said he was honoured to accept the role, becoming Sturt’s 20th Senior Coach.

“I am grateful to be appointed in such an important position by Sturt Football Club. Winning a premiership in the SANFL is still one of the best days of my life. The by-product of that success in this League, enabled me to get drafted and enjoy, albeit an injury prone, AFL career. 11 years later to now be back involved and able to have the impact and influence on like minded players to where I saw myself, is humbling and exciting.”

“My initial focus is to build relationships with all our players, staff and assistant coaches. I plan to get straight to work on list management, recruiting and preparation for the pre-season.”

A quality person, Simon Phillips. One evening four years ago, about an hour and a half after the end of a Sturt vs Norwood (which we'd been pumped in!) League match at Unley, I ventured down into the opposition rooms to see what the state of the rooms were in and there was Simon Phillips, by himself, no-one else around, picking up all the tape/rubbish off the floor! I said, "Mate. You don't have to do that!" "Go and celebrate the win with your mates." He said, "No. It should be left as we found it." Stuck with me. Clearly a quality human being.

There are people in football clubs around Australia who have dedicated most of their lives to their clubs as part-time/casual while working full time hours or volunteers and been paid next to nothing, or, not at all. Yet, code-jumping mercenaries who have given nothing but 5 minutes to the sport think they're entitled to milk the system. Give me a break! Gee, we've raised a generation of entitled brats!

The Prelim Final last year will be talked about for many years to come - maybe it will take over from the 1982 Granger Prelim Final as the most discussed PF in history. WWT lead by 52 points during the 3rd quarter and yet lose to North Adelaide who by the way had a 19th man on the ground for a few minutes in the last quarter. WWT lost the game and the opportunity to play in a Grand Final which killed off the usual financial benefits associated with being a GF team. North won the game but lost $10,000 to the SANFL. So only the SANFL gained out of this saga - to the tune of $10,000. To me the SANFL should pass that $10k onto the WWTFC and quietly take steps to ensure this 19th man event never occurs again...

Good luck getting that to happen. They would've already increased Parkinson's salary by that + some. Lots of collective 'snouts in the trough' at War Memorial Drive.....

..and with the decrease in the salary cap, it makes it harder and harder. A very senior Norwood player would be playing for us if it was not for the difficulty of travelling out to Elizabeth for training after completing a full day's work. The 90 minute round journey three or four times a week is not worth it when it comes to the pittance they are paid.

People want more for less, these days. They want to try driving a 92Km R/T from Aldinga Beach EVERY day for 11 months, dropping in at Hallett Cove for a 7 hour teaching stint, then on to Unley to work for the club that I love, then home to Aldinga Beach (never earlier than 7:45 pm) for the last 11 years as part of 42 years service! Soft, entitled lot we’ve cultivated.

This is an 'elephant in the room' scenario for not only SANFL clubs, but, sporting clubs in general. I'd dare say that all community sports clubs pretty much function with over 40's volunteers, if not over 50's. Most in these age groups have co-morbidities and would be immuno-compromised, perhaps all. Therefore they are more prone to being affected with COVID-19. Clubs have a OHSW responsibility to provide a safe working environment for these people. Pretty much footy ops would cease to function without them such is the reluctance of people under 40 to volunteer. I don't envy club administrators at the moment.

When you have an oval resembling a golf course ….beach sand filling up large sections of the ground, I think you have to question if it is up to SANFL standard to play on.

Liam Fitt was tackled also into one of those sand divots on Sunday and had to have his eyes sprayed with water to get the sand out of them. He had to come off the ground blind.

Sturt didn’t even train on it all week and it still was unplayable.

Not sure if sturt can work out if it’s an sanfl playing oval or a recreational/public dog park ???

And there wasn’t sand on Noarlunga Oval on Saturday with elite Under 18’s and 16’s playing on it some of whom will be drafted from both teams? Look deeper for your lack of success. Unley Oval isn’t part of the problem….

Why did the game go ahead then?

Pretty long bow being drawn by Wright. 88 players played 8 quarters of football at Unley and 2 players (1.7%) sustained an injury. I’ve been at the football on completely dry days where’s there’s been more injury! The mechanism of ankle injury is complicated. There are both extrinsic and intrinsic reasons, biomechanical, anatomical, previous injury history and so on. Nobody can categorically say that ground condition is solely a factor in an acute ankle injury. I’ve treated players who have rolled ankles on completely dry days. FWIW, a very large section of Noarlunga Oval at the northern end between the goal square and the centre square wasn’t in exactly pristine condition on Saturday for the elite Under 16/18 competition, either. Nobody threw their skirt in the air over it. It’s winter and Unley is a foothills ground. Grow a set and get over it. Personally ,if I was the coach, I’d be more focussed on how a side managed to leak 7 goals in a quarter against a team that struggled to kick more than 5 in an entire match over the last month! Sooky la la response from a coach under pressure to keep his job. But, nice distraction….

Brodie has been applying his trade at the Glenelg Football club in the SANFL where he successfully played in a premiership at senior level as a key defender in 2023.

It’s exciting for our club, as the 22 yo has yet to pull the two blues jumper on at senior level after a successful period at junior level that saw him play two years at the Calder Cannons. Brodie then moved interstate playing for Glenelg and the Wanderers in the Northern Territory Football League.

Brodie and his family have been involved at Abers for a long period of time and it’s great to have Brodie back at Abers! We look forward to seeing that first game and the ongoing positive impact Brodie will have on our playing group and club.

Darren will replace the outgoing James Allan, who recently accepted the senior coaching position at the Werribee Football Club in the VFL.

Darren will look after the midfield group in the seniors while also working closely with Senior Coach Jacob Surjan.

Over his playing career, Darren represented Norwood in both junior and senior grades, while also spending time at 3 AFL clubs (Adelaide, Carlton & Port Adelaide).

During his time as a coach and administrator, Darren has worked with the following programs;

Darren is one of those people you meet that you can’t help but like. He played with Sturt reserves once or twice in the “bye” days when he needed a place to play when Norwood had the bye. Thanks, mate! It's been an honor to serve Sturt and it's players over 44 years. Pleasingly, it's shone a focus on sports trainers in State League and community based sporting clubs. It's a tough gig at times, where often you're the primary caregiver for injured players. Hopefully go at least 6 seasons to go before I retire...

I don't know who put the AFL up as the gold standard in medical management. The 12/21 day scenario is all to do with the "Advanced Care Settings" that, apparently, exist in AFL clubs. You know, like the "Advanced Care Settings" on display at Adelaide Oval in August last year by PA. I still use it as an exemplar for my training staff of how NOT to manage a concussed player..... All they've done is set up situations where players will hide/not report head injuries in a number of situations and made life significantly harder for sports trainers. And, at no stage was there any consultation or communication with SANFL clubs regarding this. Typically, poorly implemented and badly thought out. Imagine trainers trying to implement this in local leagues......

After much deliberation the SANFL has accepted the AFL’s new guidelines for a minimum 21 day return to play protocol.

AFL and AFLW listed players featuring in the SANFL will still abide by the 12 day protocols.

it's been graded the lowest possible conduct (careless) the outcome is severe based on the concussion - White will miss at least two games the only possible room for manoeuvre for Port is, is the contact high (four weeks) or three (body) - p 22 of the linked document.

Yep in the past this would've been included in a 2020's version of MMM Rockin' Footy DVD as one of those incidents we all loved 10 years ago but as we all know the our sport takes concussion much more seriously hence why we get this outcome (match review sanction) when players choose to bump.

Only if he doesn't have a recurrence of symptoms in Stage 2 or 3 of the RTP. That may delay his return. I don't know what his concussion history is either. That could impact upon his RTP as well.

Well done Sturt, had a feeling everything would have had to have gone perfectly for us to win yesterday and Sturt weren't going to let that happen.

Mattner has made no secret that their old game plan was good enough to beat 8 other teams but they knew they needed to change to beat Glenelg, the ultimate reward for plenty of hard work and planning yesterday.

In Glenelg's defence, losing two defenders in the mid-season draft certainly didn't help their cause. Plus the injury to Proud the previous week. Even though I think Glenelg had more inside 50's, it was the delivery and repetition of our inside 50's that won the day. Defenders wilt under constant repeat entry pressure. You don't even have to spot key forwards up anymore. Hone, Conforti and Mathews all kicked multiple goals in both games. Of course, you still need to control the centre clearances which Lewis, Snelling and Anderson did in both games. Lachie Hosie is a class act. He continually performs in finals and is a great player.

In the last 12 months Glenelg has lost;
Snook, Gould, Stretch, Curran, Adams, Ramm, Wisdom, Ridgway, Pickett, Coulthard, Reynolds, Holder, Chandler, Proud, J.Lyons, Bell & Reeves. Eleven premiership players (and coach) gone within a year…
