Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

Round 7 down and ALL A grade teams have played each other once.

The Premiership race appears to be down to 5 teams with Nairne leading the charge atm 1 win clear of Lobethal with Woodside, Creeks and Strath level on 4 wins each.

Hahndorf were expected to struggle this year but maybe not as much as their results from the last few weeks. Saturday against Strath they got off to a solid start being 0/41 before sensationally collapsing, losing 10 33  to be bowled out for 74 as Strath knocked the runs off without loss to boost their NRR which could play a vital role come the seasons end.

The inconsistent Creek Tigers got the job done without too many dramas over the dangerous Cally Cobras who just need to find that extra 10 - 15% in performance to convert competitive performances into Wins

Lobethal as expected comfortably beat a depleted Woodside team

Macclesfield were again very competitive as they've been in every game this season in their return to A Grade batting their overs out to make 144 against Nairne and then have them under pressure at 4/67 before Mitch Hein and youngster Llewellyn put on 80 odd to seal the win.

Re: Australian International Summer (The Ashes) 2021/22

Who gives a Flying F**K about meaningless MOM awards ?

Should be more worried about the pathetic MCG Curators over the decades>
The MCG is the most over rated cricket venue in the World
Back in the 80s the square was barren of grass and the ball didn't bounce
Then it turned into a road
Now we have 2 day tests because it's too much in the bowlers favour.

These curators have unlimited resources at their disposal and still cant come up with a half decent pitch that gives a fair contest at the so called "Home of cricket"

Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

2 Rounds to go in A&EHCA and positions 2 - 5 are still wide open.

Nairne 56 0.98 %
L Creek 44 0.37 %
Woodside 40 0.39 %
Lobethal 40 0.22 %
Strath 36 0.44 %

Nairne WILL finish Minor Premiers being 3 games clear on top.

Positions 2 - 5 are all up in the air

Clubs run home

L Creek - Strtah, Nairne

Woodside - Nairne, Strath

Lobethal - Cally, Hahndorf

Strath - L Creek, Woodside

Creeks task of finishing in the all important 2nd spot is to win their last 2 matches. A win against Strath may be enough depending on NRR
Woodside are getting the staggers, falling in 2 weeks back by 1 wicket to bottom placed Macclesfield and then being obliterated by Lobethal yesterday  Looking very much like their last round clash with Strath will decide a Finals spot.
Lobethal should win their last 2 matches and will be relying on the Creeks slipping up to let them into 2nd spot
Strath with the 2nd best NRR of all the teams may make all the difference in whats shaping as a season defining game against Woodside in the last round.

A few weeks ago NRR didn't seem as it was going to play a huge part in deciding finals placings but some MASSIVE thumpings in recent weeks have tightened the NRR between sides 2 - 5 right up.

Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

Nairne v Creeks

Hmmmm These 2 could play each other 3 weeks running to decide the Premiership.
Creeks took Round 1 last week to extend their winning run to 7 on the trot to wrap up 2nd spot whilst Nairne are going into finals on the back of 2 poor batting performances.
Creeks still rely heavily on Warren who was simply masterful last week in decimating Nairnes bowlers with 92* off only 59 balls and then chipped in with 3/13 off 5 overs after Nairnes openers got away to a good start of 43 without loss before losing 10/67

Despite getting flogged by Creeks last week, Nairne will still start slight favorite this week to go straight through and host the Grand Final especially as Creeks may be in a bit of trouble with a couple of Top order batsmen in Covid isolation for this weekend at least as well as losing a 3rd batter to footy trials for South Adelaide.

Woodside v Lobethal were both hit by weddings during the year that cost them games and a top 2 spot will play off to go through to the Prelim Sunday.
Both have had their batting issues this season and with the game on the very slow Lobethal oval, it promises to be a low scoring affair.
Woodside havent been consistent enough throughout the season to win the flag from 4th imo even tho it's been done by Creeks and Nairne in the last few years. Lobethals biggest problem will be if they get through to Sunday is that they'll be hit by a wedding with most of their players invited i believe
At least the weather looks perfect this week unlike last season where rain played havoc on the 1st week of finals.

And Lobethal chased it down fairly comfortably for their first A&EH premiership
Nairne 10/122
Lobethal 4/123 (37.3 overs)

Minor Premiers curse strikes again
Last 4 Minor Premiers havent won the Flag with 3 of them not even making the decider despite the Double chance these days

Premiers

A Grade - Lobethal (3rd)
A2 Grade - Woodside (4th)
B Grade - Strath (2nd)
C Grade - Ashbourne (Minor Premiers)
D Grade - Nairne (2nd)

Re: TROTS Talk

Can someone explain to me how Tabs display their pool totals for individual races?
For instance why are pool totals for WIN pools displayed with odd amounts of cents when as far as i know all win bets have to be in multiples of 50 cents or $1 etc.

SA Tab paid a Win Div for Rockaball of $540.90. The Win pool was showing $1,081.80. So if $1.50 was invested on it for the win then that accounts for $811.35 or exactly 75% of the displayed Win pool.

The old days before flexi betting the pools and dividends (especially large multiple payouts like F4s and Quaddies etc) were easy to work out how many winning units were on them .

I'm sure someone has a simple explanation to this?

Ok, just realised that maybe they're displaying the pools with their commission already deducted from them ? That way punters cant work out the exact commission they're taking from each pool as the rate of commission may vary? Would that be right?
Like the old days commission was like 13.5% for win bets
16% quinellas
20% for Trifectas, Quaddies etc.

It was very transparent unlike these days it's all secretive it seems

Re: Great Southern Football League

fod

Creeks had only 8 of last years GF team play yesterday.

Players that did NOT play were

Sellar - Retired ?
Derham - Gone
Lally - Retired
McGregor - Gone
Dalitz - Gone
S Jones - South Adelaide

Matt Tonkin - Injured - few weeks ?
Kellock - Played for his home town in Vic 1st 2 weeks, Back next match
Howell - Covid . Back next match
Arbon - Work. Back next match
Dave Warren - Wedding. Back next match
Rodgers - Injured. Return unknown
James - Played B Grade (recovering from Covid)

Others
Hunt - Injured. Return mid year ???
Nick Thunig - B Grade . Getting match fitness

As you can see by the players missing, thats a MASSIVE amount of talent and experience missing for the opening 2 rounds so not surprised they have struggled. Have taken the chance to blood 4 - 5 youngsters but they will take a year or 2 to get up to speed of A Grade footy. It's a big step up of playing 70 minutes in Senior Colts to 110 - 120 minutes in A Grade.
The 7 - 8 top end players they have atm will only keep you in the game for so long before the dam wall breaks as it did yesterday in the 3rd quarter. Mind you there was no excuse for allowing E Bay to slam on 8 goals in the 3rd term in the 1st 15 minutes with ZERO resistance   It was embarrassing.
The expected return of 4 - 5 experienced players after Easter should see them much more competitive.
Expectations for the rest of the season? Playing Finals will still be the expectation and they still could but i'm thinking 5th spot at best.
Only 2 rounds in and a long way to go but it almost seems that the local Anzac Day Derby coming up is already a Mini Final for the Hawks.

Re: Great Southern Football League

Tips this week

Roos to beat the bays (Upset of the year) by 11
Compass to smack Goolwa 60+
Willunga to just keep McLaren out by 5pts
Myponga to get it done over yank by 40+
Strath too strong for creek by 5 goals

Some interesting results in Round 3 :?

Bays reasonably comfortable over Victor by 29 points
Compass easily over the Magpies as expected by 83 points
Myp/Sell had a training run over Yank to the tune of 102 points

In what many believe as the Grand Final preview, McLaren flexed their muscle by smashing the Demons by 58 points and have certainly made a statement.

Creeks who in the 1st 2 Rounds looked anything like a team that had played in the previous 4 Grand Finals welcomed back 6 Premiership players and that certainly made a big difference as they hammered Strath in the 2nd half to run out 53 point winners as Strath were left to lick their wounds with a few injuries and also Riley Clamp being Red Carded. Incident happened at the 2.14 hr mark of the telecast just seconds before 3/4 time. Looking at the replay there doesn't seem to be much in it as Kellock who was the Creek player that got put to ground got up and walked away as if there was nothing in it whilst a few other players took it a bit further with a brief scuffle.
Red Card is off for the match and an automatic report i'm guessing ? Hard to getting games going on the vision.

3 great games on paper next week between
Bays v Myp/Sell
Compass v Creeks
Strath v Victor

whilst there appers to be 2 blowout results on the cards with Willunga & McLaren expected to do a number on Yank and Gool/PE respectively.

Re: TROTS Talk

Was it a plunge or just the wrong price put up ??
I've seen it at the dogs

Sent from my SM-G781B using Tapatalk

I saw the odds last night and the fluctuations were something like $101 into $34 into $12 into $9 into $4.60 which is what it opened at today and then eventually shortened into $2.90

I assume it wasn't a mistake, i'm guessing sometimes the bookies or whoever sets the prices just believed it was a 100/1 chance
After all, the odds set are just someones opinion and they sometimes are proven to be correct and other times not.

I noticed Uncle Leo opened at $51 and was backed into $6 and ran unplaced so the Bookie was right on this occasion and the punters who plunged it were wrong. Works both ways.

Re: Great Southern Football League

Round 11 saw 2 upsets which sees who plays McLaren in the Grand Final still a 6 horse race.

Strath had a crucial upset win against Willunga to maintain their 5th spot whilst the Demons drop to 3rd from 2nd.

Victor scored a regulation win over winless Goo/PE tho not picking up important % which could be crucial deciding 5th spot come Rd 18. The Magpies in recent weeks have become a lot more competitive which gives them hope of scoring a win before the seasons ending.

McLaren had a raining session over Yank

The Mudlarks have continued their meteoric rise by jumping into 2nd spot after pretty much snuffing out any hope Compass had of playing Finals in a low scoring contest.

Langhorne Creek overcame last weeks disappointing 1 goal loss to Victor to inflict a staggering 153 point turnaround from their Rd 2 clash with E Bay. Thrashed by 99 points by the Bays in Rd 2, the Hawks were rank underdogs against the Bays but the Hawks didn't give them a sniff of the ball as they stifled the Bays with relentless pressure from start to finish to hand the Bays a big wake up call whilst keeping their finals chances alive with a massive Derby match against Strath coming up next week.

Re: Great Southern Football League

Big wni by Strath over the Creek yesterday, dare say 1st time in a while, I'm sure Jackpot Jim will let me know.

Anzac Day
Wednesday April 25th 2018
Strathalbyn Oval

Strath 17 - 11 Def L Creek 13 - 8

No surprise to see Creeks lose yesterday as they had 4 BIG outs and were always going to be up against it.
The loss barring a miracle has ended their Finals chances. Been a difficult year having lost stars in Sellar, Derham, Kellock and McGregor and then regularly having a handfull of their top players missing through Covid, injuries etc. Yes, they havent been alone there as most Clubs have had similar issues.
The positive for the Creeks is theyre getting games into some talented youngsters who will be the cornerstone of their future success in years to come.

Re: Great Southern Football League

Semi finals here.

Go Pongy

Willunga Demons vs Myponga/Sellicks Mudlarks
Langhorne Creek vs Encounter Bay

Saturday, August 27, 2022

So Victor lost their last 4 matches to stumble from 4th to 7th
Strath lost key matches against Victor and Bays in rounds 13 & 15 that ultimately saw them finish 6th.
Creeks came from the clouds to snatch a finals spot with 5 wins from their last 6 matches.
Bays fell in to hang onto a finals spot winning only 3 of their last 8 which culminated in a massive 135 point loss to McLaren

Tips

Willunga get the nod over Myp/Sell Jjust. With both teams pretty well having the double chance wrapped up a long way from home an no chance of getting top, it's hard to know what effect that has had on the 2 teams phychy at times. In the back half of the season Willunga were beaten by Strath and thrashed by the Creeks only a few weeks ago whilst Myp/Sell havent been overly impressive at times with a draw against Strath along with losses to the Creeks and a thrashing at the hands of the Demons. All that means little today i guess as both sides battle to have 1st crack at McLaren who are looking invincible.

Creeks clearly have the better form in the 2nd half of the season than E Bay and will start a very slight favorite on Sunday. Bays havent had a great preparation coming into finals and are probably a bit lucky to maintain a spot having only beaten 1 top 5 team for the season and that was the Creeks by a whopping 99 points in round 2 when the Creeks were depleted early in the season. Whilst the Creeks have dropped 4 matches to teams outside the 5(mostly when depleted) they made up for that by beating Willunga TWICE as well as Myp/Sell and also the Bays the 2nd time around by 54 points.
Again it all means little tomorrow in a game that could go either way. Creeks are sweating on the fitness of a couple of key players that could have a major bearing on the result if they dont play.

Re: Great Southern Football League

2nd semi
McLaren v Willunga
McLaren have done nothing wrong to suggest they'll lose their 1st game for the season and i'd expect them to go straight through to the GF where they'll be a short priced favorite for the Flag that they're under pressure to win to add to their only A Grade Flag in Great Southern way back in 2003.
Tip - McLaren by 4 goals

1st Semi
Myp/Sellicks v L Creek
All the pressure will be on Myp/Sell in this one as they'll be devo if they get knocked out in straight sets after playing in their 1st A Grade Finals series since god knows when ??? 15, 20 25 years ago ?????
Compare that record to the Creeks who have won 11 of 12 Finals matches over the past 5 seasons and havent missed a GF since 2017.
Head to Head they are 1 win each this season.
With the home ground advantage the Creeks may have been slight favorites but last weeks win against E Bay has come at a huge cost with at least 3 key players ruled out this week with injury on top of Coach Perrey still not ready to resume after a 12 week layoff with a hamstring.
Unless the Mudlarks have a few missing as well. i see them progressing to the Prelim
Tip - Mudlarks by 4 goals (happy to be proven wrong tho  )

Meanwhile Langhorne Creek hosted Goodwood CC in a trial game today. Not sure how the game went but great job to get the square ready!

A consistent cold & wet September has been horrendous for curators trying to prepare pitch squares for the upcoming season.

After a wash out last year Goodwood and the Creeks were very keen for the trial match to happen this year and the weather turned for the better just in the nick of time to get a pitch up. Pretty thin grass cover but played a treat. Local curator Luke Cousins is a master of getting a pitch up against the odds.

Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

Post Christmas / New Year Cricket resumes tomorrow in A&EHCA in forecast HOT & DRY conditions in stark contrast to the early stages of the season played in the cold and wet on heavy grounds.
The ladder sees the 2 pre season favorites in Lobethal and L Creek occupy the top 2 positions with L Creek surprisingly unbeaten so far. Thats unlikely to remain going forward one suspects with Bucks Shows, Weddings and other distractions that will continually see them play with under strength teams.
On form the 2 Tiger teams would be the likely Grand Finalists tho the Creeks have plenty to prove having been knocked out in straight sets the last 2 seasons
Lobey havent been firing on all cylinders but are still positioned nicely to grab a double chance
Nairne are currently 3rd and tho having lost a few key players from last season still remain in the mix under the radar.
Macclesfield sitting 4th is a great result for the comp and are now starting to believe they can match it with anyone and their competitive losses last season are now being turned into wins.
Strath are 5th and unless things drastically turn around with the bottom 3 teams are the only team currently outside the 4 that are a genuine chance of playing finals. Having not won a flag for 25 years the pressure continues to mount on Strath and whilst theyd be considered a bit of an outsider for the flag they're definitely a top 4 team which from there anything can happen
Must be noted that Strath have a very favorable draw for the rest of the season so it's in their hands.
Of the others Woodside are the major surprise and disappointment languishing in 2nd last position with only 2 wins :o
Hahndorf are in a rebuilding phase and are winless tho have been a lot more competitive recently.
Bremer Callington continue to frustrate their legion of supporters currently sitting 6th and within touch of the top 4 but whilst they always seem to pull off an upset or 2 each season to send a notice to the rest of the comp they then cant back it up.

Tips for Rd 11
Lobey too strong for Woodside
Strath to get over Bremer Cally. B/C desperately need the Win here to stay in contention or they're gone imo.
Nairne tho 3rd on the table are still vulnerable and need to tick off wins against lower ranked teams to remain a top 4 contender. They should account for the winless Hahndorf
Creeks host the ever improving Maccy Redbacks. Creeks are obvious favorites and expected to get the job done tho they wouldn't want to have a repeat of their batting collapse like earlier in the season when they fell in chasing only 83

What impact will the AFLs Garbage round on Apriil 15th have on cricket? I've heard a rumor that the Summit Oval will be off limits for cricket from Mid February   Wonder what sort of compensation the association are entitled to receive for the inconvenience considering they have a lease on the facility to the end of MARCH ?

Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

I see A Grade district gun Corey Kelly played for Nairne on the weekend hitting 100 off 30 balls.

Was meant to play his annual game for Burra on Saturday until they recieved a 10:30am forfeit win. Ended up finishing the day playing in this hills with a brilliant innings by the looks of it.

Played in A2s as ALL the A Grade teams had a week off for the Meyer Shield.
Odd thing was that there was a Presidential directive from the A&EHCA that precluded teams from dropping A grade standard players back to their lower grades for the weekend but there was nothing to stop an A Grade Premier League player dropping back.
Chasing Wistows 7/128 (40) Nairne chased it down in 14.3 overs without loss with Kelly making 108* off 38 balls with 10 sixes and 11 fours.

Nairne technically didnt do the wrong thing but surely Clubs have the responsibility to do what's morally right
And that's probably not playing A Grade Premier League cricketers in A2s in a country comp

Brathwaite and Chanderpaul have posted a record 1st wicket partnership for the Windies with 336 surpassing Greenidge & Haynes's 298 v India in 1983 :o
This is the 6th highest partnership for the Windies for all wickets . Hunt & Sobers hold the record with 446 back in 1958 !
Brathwaite was dismissed for 182
Windies currently 3/387 with Chanderpaul 169* n.o.

Windies Declare 6/447

Chanderpaul brought up his double ton with a 6 to finish 207* n.o. which surpasses Shivs' highest Test score of 203 !
Chanderpaul faced a marathon 467 balls a feat that his father Shiv only surpassed once in facing 510 balls against India in 2002 in making 136* n.o. in a marathon 675 minute stay at the crease

Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

Kind of bummed that Maccy couldn't nab a finals spot. Think I wouldve been great to see them in there.
Not wrong about being hard to go past Creeks but Nairne do seem to turn it on come finals time so will be an interesting watch

Would have been great to see Maccy make it but they just fell short. Probably just 1 class player away from stepping up to Finals.

Creeks undefeated is a great effort but that accounts for ZERO from now on as they now have to deal with their abysmal finals record of the last 2 years where they have been kicked out in straight sets both years
Have played ordinary cricket in those games so will have to deal with the pressure of expectation this year.
The team i would say has never been stronger with batting depth especially with Matt Tonkin back and with Frost and Jaspa Tonkin now really hitting their straps at this level. Their bowling has isn't the most consistent at times but have a plethora of options considering bowlers like Kropp and Dawson are sparingly used. Humphries has been a great pick up with the ball during the year. Creek should be full strength come 1st week of finals apart from Whiting who's away for work and it's early but maybe doubt about a key player who suffered a mystery injury today

Interesting the Creek B Grade were undefeated through the 1st 13 rounds and have since lost their last 5 matches to go from top to 3rd :o

Hard to see Strath winning 3 on the trot to break a long premiership drought as they're just too inconsistent despite a core group of talented players.
Lobey and Nairne are certainly chances of upsetting the Creeks as all their minor round games were relatively close.

Re: Great Southern Football League

Round 3

Creek v McLaren - McLaren the clear tip here to make it 23 wins on the trot. Creeks are up against it coming off a 4 day break where they've lost 3 players due to concussion protocols.

Myp / Sellicks should comfortably account for Goolwa / PE at Mudlark Park.

Victor v Strath - This is the game of the round. Leaning towards Victor. Strath were good Tuesday night against Creek but without Clamp and off a 4 day break Victor have all the favours.

Willunga should be too good for E Bay who have had a tough start to the season

Yank v Mt Compass - Compass shouldn't have too many problems in chalking up a win here

What a game ! Creeks certainly had a point to prove after their poor showing Tuesday night and with the late withdrawl of Mitch Cleggett along with Helyer it was gonna be a huge mountain to climb for them. It was a game played under finals like pressure and a real dogfight for 3 quarters with never more than a goal separating the teams. Could the Creeks keep it up in the last quarter off a 4 day break? McLaren kicked the 1st to go 7 points up whilst the Hawks tried to hang in their. The move of Clifford from down back to up forward paid dividends as he provided a target and the Creeks then broke the game open in a 10 minute burst kicking 5 unanswered goals with Clifford with 3 of them to put them 22 points up close to the 20 min mark and one would think they'd had broken McLaren BUT a team doesnt win 22 on the trot by fluke and they kept the pressure on looking to get back into it with time running out. They threw everything at the Creeks and when the Hawks cracked twice with basic defensive errors to gift McLaren 2 goals they smelt blood. Creeks tried valiantly to hold on before a debatable HTB free to McLaren in front of goal put them in front with 2 minutes to go. They then quickly sealed the win with another to make it 23 on the trot and left the Hawks players and supporters pondering what just happened in the last 10 minutes
Myp / Sellicks should comfortably account for Goolwa / PE at Mudlark Park.
Mudlarks won by about 10 goals

Victor v Strath - This is the game of the round. Leaning towards Victor. Strath were good Tuesday night against Creek but without Clamp and off a 4 day break Victor have all the favours.
Well wasn't this a surprise result. Not so much Victor winning but the margin  Clamp did play as wasn't required for the Crows but it made little difference as Victor ran rampant to win by about 14 goals
Willunga should be too good for E Bay who have had a tough start to the season
Willunga appears to have had a fairly regulation win over the Hapless Bays by about 6 goals

Yank v Mt Compass - Compass shouldn't have too many problems in chalking up a win here
Yank appear in for a very long season as Compass won by 13 goals. A positive for Yank tho is that they did win the B Grade which is at least some consolation and may be a sign that whilst Compass might not be too far off the mark in A Grade, depth may be an issue if they cop injuries ?

Re: Great Southern Football League

Has anyone heard that the Creeks might be challenging the ANZAC day result? Was doing the rounds at Willunga on the weekend Well they should be asking questions that’s for sure.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think Down The Hill answered the question about Clamps eligibility to play on ANZAC Day extremely well. The rule is poorly written, stating that a player (in this instance, Clamp) is not eligible to play for two teams in the same weekend.

As ANZAC Day was not on the weekend, he was eligible to play after lining up for Adelaide in the SANFL on the Saturday prior.

Agree.
Tho the intent of the by law may be that he shouldn't have played, it's not written that way. Play on
Having a brief chat last Thursday about it to a couple of people at the Club that would be in a position to take it further, the vibe i got was that whilst they were a little surprised he played the bigger issue was how poor the Creeks played against Strath and were committed to channeling their energies into the task of toppling McLaren on the Saturday which they just failed to do #-o

Re: Great Southern Football League

Anyone at the Compass v Willunga game? Quite the upset

Definitely a surprise but maybe we have all under estimated Compass and over estimated Willunga?

Round 5 no real surprises apart from maybe the margin in the Strath v Compass game with the Bulldogs getting right on top after half time to run out easy winners and cement 2nd spot on the ladder and send a message that thry're serious Finals contenders. Whilst Strath are really confusing everyone with their inconsistent form. Impressive wins over Myp/Sellicks and then belted L Creek but since have had big losses in their last 3 matches. :?

E Bay had a regulation win over the hapless Yankalilla who were at least more competitive this week

Victor got the job done over Goolwa/PE but not before some worrying times only being 12 points up at 3/4 time but it was all one way traffic in the last term to run out 45 point winners

The 2 matches of the day certainly didn't disappoint with 6 point margins in both games.

Mclaren extended their winning streak to 25 by coming from behind to pip the Mudlarks by 6 behinds in a low scoring affair.

Willunga also came from behind to beat the Creeks also by 6 behinds after Bass took a mark with the scores level and then slotted the winning goal after the siren from about 25 metres to steal a win after they did their best to lose it all day. Willunga had the chance to be 4 - 5 goals up at half time after dominating the 2nd term but atrocious kicking for goal kept the Hawks in the game. The undermanned Hawks missing key Forwards in Helyer & Howell scrapped their way to a 2 goal lead into time on in the last term but as they did against McLaren 2 weeks ago couldn't get the job done in the last 5 minutes to let 2 invaluable wins slip from their grasp in a season thats shaping up to be VERY competitive where wins will have to be hard earnt week in week out.

Re: Great Southern Football League

I can’t see Yank winning a game , however oddly enough if the can minimise the blowouts from the previous years they may see it as some what successful. I have heard ( not certain if correct ) that the coach has signed on for 3 years , if so then that’s good news for the Club . At least he knew and accepted what was ahead of him.

Seems Yank where more than competitive Saturday against Willunga surprisingly only going down by 7 goals after being within 18 points at 3/4 time :o
Despite that it would be a shock to see them beat any team for the rest of the season apart from Goolwa / PE when they meet again in Round 10.

Besides Strath belting Glw/ PE on the back of a 10 goal to 1 last term, Round 6 was a great round looking at the scores.

McLaren just keep answering every challenge put in front of them again prevailing in a tight finish, 13 points to spare over Victor to record win no. 26 on the trot.

E Bay came within 3 points of causing the upset over Myp / Sellicks in a low scoring scrap at Mudlark Park.

L Creek finally won a close one, after last minute losses to McLaren and Willunga in recent weeks, their match was heading for a cliffhanger finish again before gripping on to an 8 point win over Compass who have been in great form.

The wash up is that it seems for the rest of the season there should be at least 3 cracking games each weekend given how close the comp looks to be from 1 down to 8 atm with few easy wins there for the taking.

Re: Great Southern Football League

Good to see Yank and Gool / PE being more competitive in recent weeks.

Incredible turnaround by G / PE coming off a 99 point drubbing to Strath to be leading McLaren at 3/4 time before succumbing in the last term.
Also Yank being smashed by the Creeks by 137 points only a few weeks back to be trailing Willunga by only 3 goals at 3/4 time last week just shows that NO result can be taken for granted.

Creeks have been terrific the last month whilst being undermanned but couldn't sustain it Saturday against the Mudlarks. Kicking with the aid of the breeze in the 1st term the Creeks had 75% of the play in their forward half but could only register 3 behinds as they failed to find a way through the tight Mudlark defense and not helping themselves with numerous poor entries rarely to the advantage of their own players. Whilst the Mudlarks only scored the solitary goal they would have been well satisfied at quarter time. The Greens were much more efficient and dangerous than the Creeks with the breeze in the 2nd quarter and when they slotted the first 3 goals all from the boundary the writing was on the wall.
Creeks limited the damage in the 3rd term but didn't threaten to score a goal themselves. With the result all but over at 3/4 time the Mudlarks ran amok in the last term as they dominated the clearances as the Creeks missed Keynes in ruck. Creeks also wern't helped with Helyer returning after a month off with concussion taking little part in the match after doing a hamstring in the 1st term and looks set for another extended spell.
Myp /. Sell certainly look a real contender for their 1st A Flag since 1984 !!!!!!

E Bay cant take a trick atm going down by under a goal again this time to Compass who banked another invaluable 2 points in a season where every win is critical given how hard they seem to come by.

Willunga were too good to a wayward kicking Strath to keep touch with a top 3 spot whilst the Roosters are slowly going down the path of previous seasons by showing they can match it at times with the best but not consistent enough to get the wins required to play finals.

Re: Great Southern Football League

8 rounds down and what can we make of the table atm?
McLaren on top undefeated tho no where near as dominant as last year and could say fortunate not to have lost a game or 2. They're the front runners for Minor Premiers with Myp/Sellicks the only challenger in my view.
Myp/Sell are 2nd and would be a shock if didn't finish top 3
Victor, Compass and Willunga make up the 5 and seemingly one of these 3 will take the double chance

Creek in 6th (could easily have been equal 2nd bar for a last minute goal here and there). Probably have a better squad than last year when finishing 4th but hard to see them making finals from here considering the significant injuries they've been copping to key players. Coach Perrey the latest casualty.
Strath 7th arn't out of it completely but need to knock the dangerous Bays off next round and then start taking some big scalps in the 2nd half of the season to be any chance of seeing finals action.

Round 8
McLaren notched win 28 on the trot by blowing the Bays off the park in the 1st term. Thereafter it was quite even but the damage had been done.

Myp/Sell had Butcher back in whilst Willunga had Jack Redden in a crucial game for both teams. The Mudlarks held the ascendancy all day and incresed their lead at each break to record a decisive 26 point win which really throws up some question marks whether Willunga are a genuine contender ??

The other crucial match was Victor and Compass where Victor broke the game open in the 2nd term and maintain the advantage in the 2nd half for a 34 point win

Strath had a regulation win over Yank by 40 points who have shown improvement in the last month

2 weeks ago one would have tipped the Creeks in a cakewalk over Goolwa/PE but after last weeks great showing by the Magpies against McLaren this result was very much up in the air and that's how the game turned out as it went down to the wire. The Magpies came out full of confidence in the 1st term as they had the Hawks rattled at both ends of the field as they raced to a 4 goal lead. The Hawks yips in front of goal continued in the 2nd term which saw G/PE go in with a 12 point half time lead. The Hawks had it all in front of them in the 2nd half without Coach Perrey who went to hospital with a severe shoulder injury. Howell with a couple of quick goals to start off the 3rd term to level the scores put big doubts into the minds of the Magpies whether they could go on with it. The game turned into a real scrap and not great viewing from here. The Creeks got on top in the last term and when they got out to a 19 point lead with 10 mins to go it looked all over but as they have done in most of their matches they havent finished it off and it was all the maggies in the last 10 mins as they peppered the goals but couldn't nail the goals as the Creeks became very frustrated with their own mistakes and the whistle happy umpires resulting in Howell been giving his marching orders for the match which left the Creeks 1 short for the last 5 mins.
The final siren seeing the Hawks hang on for a 10 point win and looking forward to a much needed weekend off. Goo/PE are showing better signs but until they can put in a 4 quarter effort it's still a bit hard to see them getting a win or 2 instead of honorable losses which no team wants to be known for.

Re: Over rate in Test cricket

Out of curiosity SMG, what number of overs would you be happy with? 80 per day? 70? 60?

Over rates aren't improving which suggests to me that the penalties aren't sufficient.
I don't care, so long as we get a result. The biggest blight on Test cricket are dead pitches and boring draws. Tell me the last time a Test match result was compromised because we didn't bowl 450 overs across the 5 days. Look at how England are playing. Does anyone really care if they are 3 overs short on their daily quota? Same this game.

The fact is that if there is meant to be a minimum 90 overs bowled in a day it should be bowled simple as that !!! Whats the point of having an extra 30 minutes to achieve it and still finish up way short? May as well just go back to time and end up what the West Indies were doing back in the 80s and bowling 65 - 70 overs in a day making it virtually impossible for the Opposition to score quick enough to force a result.

Would it be fair that in an ODI the team bats 1st faced 50 overs and the team batting 2nd only got 46 overs because of a slow over rate?

Or in AFL there was NO time on ? Just play a flat 25 minutes each quarter and who cares if we lost real time through time wasting etc and cost a team a chance of winning?

In this World Test Championship Final it's more important than ever to ensure there's a MINIMUM of 450 overs bowled given that a DRAW is good enough for a team to share the title. Thats why they have the reserve day for time lost for weather tho i'm assuming it's not for slow over rates which makes it just ridiculous.

That fact is that because overs have been lost in this match, that has forced Australia to declare earlier than they may have wanted to as if they had the extra 20 - 30 overs or whatever it is that has been lost they could have batted longer and taken the lead to over 500 with still plenty of time to bowl India out.

Yes you can point out that in recent times that slow over rates isn't affecting the result of a match but when it does it's not good enough.

Re: Ashes 2023

In all seriousness if you win a toss on a pitch that isn’t doing much and put 380 on the board then it’s about a par score. We just need to dig in here and put 500+ on the board. I’d take where we are at the moment however the jobs over to our batsmen. Hazlewood said it well imo - Don’t care if you score 380 in a day or in 2, it’s the same score….

Interesting decision to declare on 393 when batting 1st in the friendliest batting conditions one could wish for. I reckon par score is more like 450 - 500

So how would Australia have felt about the declaration? I think they would have been ecstatic knowing that if England didn't who knows what they may have ended up with ? The only downside was that they had to bat for 4 overs before stumps. Whats the big deal about that? It what opening batsmen are in the team for. Would it be any easier for them if England batted on into Day 2 for 30 minutes and smashing another 30 - 40 to frustrate them and then have only 10 minutes to rush off an prepare? NO !
Really hope Aust bat for 5 - 6 sessions here and grind the Poms into the dust to make their decision look stupid.

Surely the Aussies are sporting the bigger smiles after day 1 despite their bowlers being touched up a bit

Re: Great Southern Football League

10 down 8 to go

McLaren saw off another challenger in shaking off Compass in the 2nd half to win by 20 points and extend their streak to 30 on the trot
Will be quite a feat if they can make it to 40 and 2 perfect seasons on the trot. Still think it's unlikely but with every win it gets closer to reality.

Yank broke the ice by beating Goolwa/PE in a low scoring encounter. Hard to see either team getting another win for the season and looks like % may decide the spoon.

Willunga maintained a handy break over Victor throughout the match to record a decisive 6 goal win and return to a top 3 spot which will be crucial come finals.

A big last qtr by Myp/Sellicks saw them over run Strath to record the crucial 2 points to retain 2nd spot whilst Strath's finals chances slip further with every loss.

E Bay got over an injury ravished Creek side by 27 points to reverse the round 1 result. 14 - 6 to 10 - 3 was a surprisingly accurate scoreline considering the extremely windy conditions

McLaren almost have the Minor Premiership sewn up and with that are clear flag favorites
Myp/Sell, Willunga, Victor & Compass are all in a battle for 2nd to 5th with the exact order every chance of being clouded until Rd 18
Strath are the only team that could possibly break into the 5 but being a game out plus a sizable % difference it will be a tough task.
Creeks and Bays will finish 7/8 but on their day could still cause some upsets. Creeks will need to get some players back which may not be for a few weeks still.

1/ The Starc catch last night was clearly NOT OUT and cant believe how many are arguing the point.
It's beyond belief that Starc seemed to deliberately place the ball on the ground and give reason for the legality of it to be questioned.
Practically ALL fielders when diving for a catch always do everything to ensure that after they take the catch that they doing everything possible to keep the ball away from the green stuff. It's just instinctive. Again i just cant understand what Starc was thinking ?

2/ Why are Australia bowling this short rubbish when every ball that's pitched up atm looks a good chance of getting a wicket ?
think once they get 1 wicket the rest will follow pretty quick

Re: Great Southern Football League

Rd 11 guesses

McLaren to remain unbeaten in the Match of the Day at Willunga. McLaren by 11 points

Compass easily over Goolwa/PE by 46

Strath should get over an undermanned Creeks by 28 points to remain in the hunt for 5th

Yanks celebrations will short lived and it's back to reality in coming up 68 points short of Myp/Sellicks

Victor need to get the job done over the Bays to stay in contention for a top 3 spot. Roos by 23 points

Good summary JJ.

Off to see my 3rd Pongy game tomorrow for the season. I hope your prediction is correct. =D> =D>

Terrible tipping by myself

Willunga easily over McLaren. Not a surprise there but the margin was 52 points :o

Compass going down to Goolwa/PE was a HUGE upset and even more so the margin of 48 points is just hard to fathom

Creeks got over their arch rivals in a slight upset by 8 points which keeps 5th spot slightly open tho Compass would still be heavy favorites to stay there.
Creeks where helped by the return by Helyer who gave them an extra much needed presence up forward and Clifford who combined with Derham were outstanding down back quelling Straths scoring opportunites.

The Mudlarks had their expected easy win over Yankalilla who whilst not expecting to seriously challenge would have been disappointed with the huge 123 point defeat

Victor after taking control in the 2nd quarter then did enough to keep E Bay at arms length in the 2nd half to take a crucial 2 points by a 2 goal margin to stay in touch for a double chance come finals
